Just watching the enjoyment children get from songs and nursery rhymes that involve counting is evidence of their natural ease. Do you remember this nursery rhyme? ’’One, two -buckle my shoe; three, four-shut the door; five, six-pick up sticks; seven, eight- lay them straight; nine, ten- a big fat hen.” 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10-these early counting activities set the stage for later learnings in arithmetic. Counting, however, is not limited to merely reciting strings of numbers. It also includes matching numbers to objects and reaching totals. For example, counting the number of apples sitting on the Chavez table or counting the number of tortillas in the package. A good way to teach children simple math is to build on this informal knowledge. This is why learning to count everyday objects is an excellent basis for early arithmetic lessons. Children begin with rote counting (1,2,3,4) and then progress to memorizing compulations or multiplication (2 x 2 = 4). As children learn the facts of arithmetic in school, they learn to combine these same basic facts that they have learned at home by using more difficult methods. As these skills grow, they rely less and less on counting and more and more on multiplication, addition, subtraction, and division. Remember that since parents are their child’s first teachers, these early steps in counting and simple arithmetic should be learned at home. Look for books at the library that have stories about numbers. Have your children help you count grocery items to buy at the store. Una manera buena de enzenar a los ñiños simple matemática es el de conocimiento informal. Por eso es que el aprender a contar los artículos que se ven a diario en una base excelente para lecciones de matemática a edad temprana. Los ñiños empiezan a contar en repetido (1,2,3,4) y luego ya aprendieron en la casa usando métodos mas difíciles. Recuerden que como los padres son los primeros maestros de los ñiños, esos primeros pasos en aprender a contar y aritmética simple se debe aprender en la casa.
