Con ^sto de la anexacion, la re-evaluacion y la elección de bonos para una escuela superior nueva, y tantas actividades, ya podríamos ocupar mas reporteras! Dos tigeres a la vez.... Que Viva El Concilio de la Ciudad de Uvalde! Ellos enfrentaron valientemente dos asuntos muy delicados— la admicion, o anexacion a nuevas propiedades a la ciudad y el asunto de re-valorizar las propiedades de la ciudad. La decision de re-valorizar las propiedades fue muy buena. Los valores de propiedades cambian y los impuestos se deben cambiar de acuerdo. Veinte anos es mucho tiempo sin llevar acabo este trabajo y por esta razon el aumento a sido tan difícil de aceptar. Sin embargo, el Jues Ross Doughty y el Sr. Fred Horner trajieron a la luz dos puntos muy importantes sobre el asunto. Esos que se quejaron con los evaluadores o la Mesa de Igualizacion \el grupo de ciudadanos delegados a poner y aceptar valores de propiedades para asuntos de impuestos] se les rebajo el valor de sus propiedades inmediatamente. brillantes errores se comitieron, dijo el Jues Doughty. La Ciudad fue valiente al iniciar la revalorization, luego muy valiente al obtener una firma evaluadora de fuera de la ciudad, —una profesional y acreditada firma- para prevenir quejas que evaluadores locales pracitacaran favoritismo. Ahora deberán ser valientes otra vez y decidir que verdaderamente es lo mas justo para nuestros ciudadanos. A todos nos gusta quejarnos, pero vamos todos a pensar esta situación muy bien y ojala que mas individuos preocupados como Fred Horner y el Juez Ross Doughty ofrescan a nuestro Concilio algunas opiniones muy bien pensadas. Mis queridos compañeros Mexico-Americanos: permítanme urgirles lo siguiente: Infórmense bien de los asuntos locales que afectan su futuro y el de sus hijos. Nosotros hoy en dia tenemos muchas oportunidades para envolvemos en el proceso de hacer decisiones. El Concilio de la Ciudad publico numerosos anuncios en El Uvalde Times sobre muchas juntas que nos afectan mucho— sobre re-clasificacion de vecindades, sobre la re-evaluacion y la anexacion. Desde el principio hasta el fin se han ofrecido numerosas oportunidades para sugerir, preguntar, pedir information. Por favor hagan nota de los anuncios en la sección clasificada y asistan a estas juntas, antes de que sea muy tarde. La junta del martes fue un ejemplo de como deben ser todas las juntas. Hubo muchas caras nuevas, muchas por primera vez. Créanme que en la ciudad esta el grupo de oficiales mas justo que todos los demas. Sean ciudadanos informados y activos. Asistan a todas las juntas—del condado, ciudad, escuela, colegio -todas las que puedadn. Su dinero de impuestos se esta figurando y gastando alli. Sobre la Escuela Nueva... La Mesa Directiva Escolar y los administradores están haciendo todo lo posible por hablar con todos los ciudadanos y explicar la razon porque se necesita la escuela nueva. Mucho trabajo se esta haciendo para asegurar que todos tengamos la oportunidad de hacer preguntas. Otra vez digo, a todos nos gusta quejarnos y criticar, pero que estamos haciendo cada uno de nosotros para ayudar la situación? Necesitamos una escuela nueva, no cabe duda, y yo voy a votar por ella. Continuare haciendo preguntas de esto y lo otro, pero si ayudare a que pase la elección porque quiero si no se hace pronto, después nos va costar mas. Ademas, yo no quiero que cuando mis hijos lleguen a high school tengan que asistir en las condiciones en la cual los alumnos están hoy. Es un ambiente insaludable y muy desagradable para la educación. De nuevo, vamos a ser francos con la directiva escolar, hacer preguntas y hacer sugerencias, estar envueltos. Tal vez cuando todo esto termine, tendremos una escuela nueva y una nueva comunidad, mas amistosa y mas unida. Haunted Mansion Invites Guests The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day saints is sponsoring once again this Halloween a night of excitement. The chilling, thrilling, excitement of the Haunted Mansion will be open to all ages from sunset to 10:30 p.m. on the 30th and 31st. There’s a 25 cent admission for children an 50 cents for adutls. The Mansion will open at sunset and tickets are 25 cents for children and 50 cents for adults. This I Have To Soy By Olga Rodriquez Last week I said I needed two heads, this week I needed three! What with annexation, re-evaluation, the bond election and so many other activities I could use a few more reporters! Two tigers at the same time... Hurray for our City Countil. They braved two very sensitive issues, annexation and property re-evaluation. The decision to re-evaluate the properties was good. Property values change and so taxing must be changed accordingly. Twenty years was too long to wait and that is one reason the raise is hard to swallow. However, Judge Ross Doughty and Fred Horner brought out good points on the matter. Those that complained before the appraisers and the Board of Equalization seemed to have gotten their values lotvred immediately. “GLARING ERRORS" were comitted, Judge Doughty said. The City was brave enough to venture into re-evaluation, then brave enough to obtain an outside professional, accredited appraisal firm-- to avoid possible complaints of favoritism by local appraisers. Now it must be brave again and decide what is best for the citizens of Uvalde. We all like to complain but let's all ponder this one and hopefully more concerned individuals like Fred Horner and Judge Ross Doughty will offer our City Council some well thought out advice. My fellow Mexican-American readers please allow me to urge you to do the following—become informed on local issues that affect your future and that of your children. We are fortunate to have many more opportunities today to become involved in the decision making process. The City of Uvalde published in El Uvalde Times notices of every public hearing and meeting that affects us-rezoning, annexation, property re-evaluation. Make a note to look through our classified section and note them. Then attend these hearings. Last Tuesdays Council meeting is an example of how every meeting should be. Let's be active, informed citizens. Attend all public meetings, city, county, commissioners, college board of trustees, all of them that you can. Your tax money is being calculated and spent there. School Bond Issue.... The Uvalde Consolidated Board of Trustees and the administrators are doing their best to talk to the citizens and explain the need for the new high school. A lot of work is being done to assure everyone is given the opportunity to ask questions. Here again, we all like to complain and criticize, but what are we doing to help the situation? We need a new high school, there is no doubt about it, and I will vote for it. I will continue to ask questions this and that, but I will help get the bond issue passed because [7] if we don't, it will end up costing us more[2] I don t want any of our children to attend high school in the condition students there are attending today. It is an unhealthy and detrimental environment for education. Again, let's be frank with our school board, ask questions, make suggestions, be involved. Perhaps when its all over we will have won a new high school and a new, friendlier, more united community. School out Friday Coca Cola employees honored The Uvalde Coca Cola Company presented awards to some of their employees at their Annual Picnic Party Saturday, October 20, 1979 at the City Fair Grounds. Completing 25 years of Service with the Company were Robert Gonzales, George Roman and Jerome Gold. Each one of them was presented a Three diamond ring by Marvin Griffin of San Antonio. Richard Martinez of Uvalde and Juan Martinez of Crystal City were presented a Tie Tack with a Coke enblem, composed of Three rubies and one diamond for their 15 years of service. Tony Villarreal from Crystal City was presented a Tie Tack with Three rubies for his 10 years of Service. Food and games were enjoyed by all following the presentation. It will, how-ever be a teacher “Inservice” day, and may of the personnel in the Uvalde CISDwill attend the Annual TSTA Alamo District XX convention in San Antonio. Robert D. Gaylor, retired Chief Master Sgt. from the Air Force, will be the featured speaker at the annual convention held in the San Antonio Convention Center. Gaylor will be talking on “How to Take the Strengths of Your Personality and Make Them Work for You.” Mildred Lytle, San Antonio ISD educator and president of TSTA district XX, said some 15,000 area educators are expedted to attend this general session and other convention activities. Most of the public schools in the 18 county area will be closed Friday. Since there will be no school Friday, the afternoon pep rally will be held at the Downtown Square at 2:45.
