McKee, Jr. This column will describe some opportunities available to students involving private schools and testing. The first program A Better Chance, helps place academically talented and highly motivated minority students in private secondary schools throughout the nation. This program locates scholarships to pay for tuition, room and board at private prep schools in the northeastern portion of the United States. At times, the program also provides the funds for travel to and from the school and a clothing allowance. ' The Falcon Foundation provides a limited number of scholarships which partially cover room, board, and tuition at selected preparatory school. Students selected by prep schools for a scholarship must be able to pay for transportation to and from the school and for clothing, laundry, and other personal expenses at the school. Students selected must be highly motivated student whose high school education didn’t adequately prepare them for entrance into the U.S. Air Force Academy. Students must be at least 17 years of age and under 22 years old; unmarried; good moral character; good physical condition; at least 5 feet 6 inches and not over 6 feet 8 inches: and have 20/20 vision. student has outstanding academic and leadership abilities. There is a National Engineering Aptitude Search, sponsored by the Junior Engineering Technical Society (JETS), Inc. which conducts a testing program in science and mate to determine a student’s aptitude and qualifications towards engineering at the college level. It doesn’t replace the ACT or SAT exam. It doesn’t provide any scholarship money, but some colleges will use the NEAS scores in the selection process for scholarship awards. NEAS testing is open to students in grades 9 through 12, who are interested in an engineering career. Testing is usually in February and March. All three of these programs are worth investigation if a student is interested in attending an Ivy League college, the U.S. Air Force Academy, or majoring in engineering. In the first two programs, the student will board at specific schools. Students must realize they won’t be able to come home except on major holidays (Thanksgiving, Christmas, Spring Break and summer). All of these programs are open to both female and male students. She attended graduate school at North Carolina State University. Phillip C. McKee Jr. attended the University of Texas at San Antonio. Cynthia is a Uvalde native whose family moved to Vir- ginia in 1965. It was there she met and married Phillip. In 1989, while searching for scholarships for then-son, they founded College Resource Materials. Their son was offered over $342,000 in scholarships during his high school senior year. Since then, they have assisted students of all types and ages across the country in finding scholarships to attend college.
