Have You Been Out To The River?
For those of you that are like my family and can’t afford a vacation outside Uvalde, let me recommend you the best relaxation I know of.... spend a day by the river. We are lucky to have a lot of good, safe swimming areas all around us. All you need is a little bit of gas in your car, some picnic supplies and some safety precautions— insect repellent and other first aid items, and of course some common sense in the water and in walking through the brush. Its inexpensive, healthy and most relaxing!
About Children and Chickens....
Recently Richard and I had a visit from our friends Ramon and Lidia Velasquez, former Uvaldeans who now reside in San Antonio. The occasion brought back some memories of how some events led to the establishment of El Uvalde Times.
The primary reason, of course, was that there was a need here for a newspaper that represented the Mexican-American point of view, presented our activities and mirrored a truer image of our contributions to the community. The need got together with my meddling instincts and thus a newspaper came to be. Prior to the newspaper, certain circumstances of the past led to the existance of a radio program that Ramon Velasquez and I ‘co-produced’ each Sunday after the 3 p.m. news and which was heard over Radio Station KVOU from February to October 1977. The program was called ‘Comentario’ and it was totally in Spanish.
At first we would tape the program in my kitchen. Richard provided technical assistance (he recorded it on a cassette tape recorder) and criticized the tone and speed of our voices until he was satisfied. Lidia corrected and helped translate our Spanish.
This was fun and exciting for us but it was also a little hectic at times. Tffe recorder also picked up the children and the TV in the next room and the crowing of my neighbor’s chickens. We were offered the use of the studio at the station but since we both had full time jobs it was difficult to be there during the day when the station employees were there. The most difficult part was writing two scripts- one in Spanish and one in English for the station manager to have on file. It wa§ fun to-ad lib comments, buFit was weary to run back the tape and write all we had said.
Ramon is a natural comedian and his ‘extralines’ a lot of times made the show. His comments would go like this- “Mrs. Gregoria Quesada has asked us to tell the City that to find craters they don’t have to go to the moon— All they have to do is drive down Capitan Street.” Or— There’s a neighbor on Flores St. complaining about the drainage being so bad there that when it rains he has to put on his rubber boots to get into his car to go to work. He says the neighbors always think he’s going fishing!’. And then there was a man that “wants to request the school district to add some school buses. He says our children are being bussed like sardines!”
My problem was always saying to much and refusing to be censored!
The program picked up momentum as we covered issues our listeneres asked us to mention— like the bad condition at that time of the West End Park, now called Jardin de Heroes; the unpaved, unlighted streets, the redistricting issue of the County Commission-
No Ha Ido Al Rio?
Para ustedes que como mi familia no pueden salir de vacaciones fuera de UValde, les recomiendo el mejor descanso que yo conosco..pasen un dia en el rio. Nosotros tenemos la fortuna de vivir cerca de muchos lugares donde nadar con seguridad. Todo lo que necesitan es un poco de gas en su coche, algunos artículos de dia de campo (comida) y algunas precauciones de seguridad—y claro b sensatez en el agua y al andar en el monte. No cuesta caro, es saludable y muy agradable!
Los Niños y Las Gallinas....
Recientemente Ricardo y yo recibimos la visita de Ramon y Lidia Velasquez de San Antonio,
quienes anteriormente vivian en Uvalde. La ocasión nos trajo recuerdos de los eventos que llegaron a causar el establecimiento de El Uvalde Times.
La primera razon fue, claro, que existia la necesidad de un periódico que representara el punto Mexico-Americano, presentara nuestras actividades y fuera un verdadero espejo de nuestras contribuciones a nuestra comunidad. La necesidad se junto con mis instinctos de “entrometida” y asi fue que el periódico llego a existir. Antes del periódico, ciertas circum-stancias del pasado llego a la existencia de un programa de radio que yo y Ramon “co-produ-
ciamos” cada domingo y que se escuchaba sobre la radio-difusora KVOU desde febrero hasta Octubre 1979 y era totalmente en español.
Al principio gravavamos el programa en mi cocina. Ricardo nos prestaba asistencia técnica (el gravaba el programa en un gravador pequeño) y nos criticaba el tono y la rapiedez de nuestras voces hasta que estaba satisfecho. Lidia nos correjia y nos ayudaba con el español.
Era muy exitante y divertido pero poco pesado a veces. La gravadora también levantava los gritos de los niños y la television en el siguiente cuarto y también las gallinas de la vecina. Nos ofrecian el estudio de la estación pero como los dos trabajábamos no podían ir durante el dia cuando estuvieran alli los empleados. Lo mas difícil era escribir dos programas-uno en español y otro en ingles para que el gerente guardara uno en sus archivos. Era divertido agregarle lineas al programa de improviso, pero mucho trabajo repasar la T?inta^para -escribir lo que habíamos dicho.
Ramon es un comico natural y sus lineas extras muchas veces “hacian el programa”. Sus comentarios eran algo asi; La Sra Gregoria Quesada nos ha pedido que les digamos a la cuidad que para hallar posos no tiene que ir a la luna, todo lo que tienen que hacer es ir por la calle Capitan.” O- “Aqui nos llamo un vecino que vive por la calle Flores quejándose que el drenaje esta tan mal por esa calle que cuando llueve se tiene que poner las botas de ule para subirse a su carro para irse al trabajo. Dice, “Nada vale, los vecinos piensan que voy a la pesca. Y ubo un señor que “quiere que el distrito escolar ponga mas autobuses porque llevan a los niños como sardinas!”

Mi problema siempre era que queria hablar de mas y me querían censurar mis lineas!
El programa aumento en popularidad al cubrir asuntos que nuestros radio—escuchas nos pedían -las malas condiciones del parque Mexicano (en aquel tiempo), las calles sin pavemiento y sin luces, el asunto de re-acomodar las distritos de comisionados del condado, el Programa Follow-Through y finalmente la propuesta constitución de la Iglesia Sagrado Corazon. Por alguna razon nos dijieron en octubre que la estación hiba a tener mucho trabajo y tenian que quitar el programa. Nunca olvidaremos esta etapa en nuestras vidas. El programa fue con seguridad un paso hacia la existencia de El Uvalde Times.

Game Warden Applicants Sought
The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department is taking applications for employment as Game Warden until 5 p.m. July 31,1979.
Applicants may be male or female.
The applications for employment may be obtained from the Parks and Wildlife Department, 4200 Smith School Rd., Austin, Texas 78744 or from Parks and Wildlife Denartment,
P.O. Drawer 9467, San Antonio, Texas 78204.
The basic requirements are a high school diploma or G.E.D., good physical condition: Eye sight correctable to 20-20, at least 21 years old at
date of graduation from academy, good moral character, good driving record.
