PAGE 2 EL UVALDE TIMES JULY 5, 1979 This I Have To Say By Olga M. Rodriquez Did You Have a Nice Fourth? By the time you read this, you will already be back at the old grind after a very happy fourth, I hope. One thing is certain, unless the gas situation lets up a bit, holidays aren’t what they used to be. Some families will find staying at home a new challenge, while those living away from home will miss not coming home. Some tragedies can be prevented..... Looking over the accident reports this week makes me wish I had a magic wand to put things back how they could have been- safe for everyone. What can you do to make your home, your automobile driving, your family outing more safe? I don’t especially like to preach too much on how people should lead their lives— I’m certainly far from perfect— but this bit of advise comes from pondering about my own household, and I sincerely wish to help by creating an awareness of the need for safety practices. Post 479 Has Always Helped....... As a receipient of a scholarship to Southwest Texas Junior College from the American Legion Post 479 (back in ’65!) I am one to sound off praise and admiration for the members of this dedicated organization. There have been many students who have been aided by the legionaires of Post 479 and their contribution not only to education but to the community in general, especially in time of need. I know that in many occasions there have been very few active members, but yet those few have kept the organization going and they give their best. Congratulations to the new officers and may you all have continued success in all your endeavors. And THANK YOU! Judge Bustamente Spoke Appropriately.... Judge Albert Bustamante spoke very timely on Americanism at the American Legion meeting last Saturday. He said a country that made it possible for a child of a migrant family from Asherton, Texas (he was one of eleven children) become a high government official had the best system of government— because it proved that everyone had a chance here. Back To Basics.... , \ W" Sp ■ - -4 “ £ " "v- i - Vr .'¡¿''■./t i’"1 J All these shortages we/'are seeing in^thfej decade- sugar, coffee, gas— has served*as a lesson to a very spoiled society that we must not be wasteful. Today more than ever, every penny counts. As we become more econom-cally minded parents, we will surely produce better citizens with our children. My family came face to face with the gas shortage this weekend as we started home from Austin. We couldn’t find a service sta-itibn with gas and in San Antonio we went through ten or thirteen that were closed before we found one that could only sell us $5 worth of gas. There will surely be a change in America’s lifestyle. With the sacrifice of giving up some luxuries will come a lot more sensible use of our natural resources-- and our money! y XX XK=>iK X Jr. is Coining! X X EL UVALDE TIMES 621W. Main St.*P.O. Rodriquez Se Divirtieron El ‘Cuatro’? Volvemos A Lo Básico.... Estas escases que estamos viendo en esta ultima decada (diez anos)— azúcar, cafe, gas-han servido como una lección a una sociedad muy mimada y esta lección es que ya no debemos desperdiciar nada. Hoy en dia, mas que nunca, cada centavito cuenta. Y nosotros como padres mas concientes de economizar, Letter To The Editor July 1, 1979 Dear Editor, Please print the following letter of appreciation: THANK YOU KIKO GONZALES Thank you for the hard work and devotion this past season in the Little League. We know our son, Paul, has learned alot from you! We know this season will be something he’ll remember all his life. We appreciate your hard work. Mr. and Mrs. Paul P. Hernandez 721 E. Nopal Street Business Can Use Inflation For Financing Small business firms hard pressed for new sources of capital funds may find it advantageous to consider property re-evaluation as a means of boosting collateral needed for loan guarantees. This suggestion comes from Jaime Roman, Sr., economist in charge of small business development with the Texas Agricultural Extension Service, Texas A&M University System. ‘"Growing firms are often faced with an increased demand for capital expansion with which to finance larger or to provide for a ‘safety cushion’ due to higher accounts receivable,” notes Roman. ",Since banks usually demand specific collateral for term loans, the small entrepreneur may have to take a closer look at the possibility of an increased net worth resulting from inflated property values.” Inflation may have vastly boosted the Leadership Through Education Motivation is an attitude within a person that creates the will to do something. People are motivated to act as individuals and to work together in organized groups. The ability to motivate others is an important leadership skill that can be learned and used to make community groups more effective, says Ernest Shaw, County Extension agent for Harris County with the Texas Agricultural Extension Service. There are many levels of leadership and more than one leader in most groups. These are the people who can influence other individuals or members of a group to act and who can organize this action towards some selected goal. Leadership skills and qualities can be learned and developed by the individual. The county Extension agent says, first, the leader must have self-direction and dedication. You can’t expect to influece others until you have mastered the ability to lead yourself. Leadership and motivation begins by understanding how members of the group think and reason, he continues. This thinking and reasoning process is influenced by man’s basic needs. These motivational needs can be divided into five categories: physiological, security, social, ego, and selfactualization. needs ___ _ _____ jasic.T They include food, shelter, { and clothing (or income to buy these needs) that main- group and to be a part of what is going on. Ego is the need to feel worthy, to be of importance, to have a feeling of self-worth and self-respect. Self-actualization is the need to be creative to be in charge, to direct or give directions. How can these basic needs be utilized by a leader as a source of motivation to individuals and members of a group? According to Shaw, a leader first, assigns or gives meaningful responsibilities with enough resources and support for them to be successful. Second, keeps people informed about everything that will affect them, their responsibility or areas in which they are interested. Third, gives recognition. Publicizes committee appointments, plans made by various members, and responsibilities accepted by them. Fourth, gives praise, awards, public recognition, and personal commendations for achieve-men ts accomplished. Expresses appreciation for their efforts and contributions to the project or activity. The leader can utilize other motivational needs. Shaw also says that some members may be motivated by the opportunity to make money while others may participate in group activities that will add to their security such as providing fire protection, polire protection, or civil defense.
