10 EL UVALDE TIMES MAY 11, 1991 Read Me A Story by Jane M. Chavez The best way for parents to help their children become better readers is to read to them — even when they are very young. Children benefit most from listening to stories read aloud to them when they discuss stories, learn to identify letters and words, and talk about the meaning of words. At home, as in school, the more reading the better. Next to hugging a child, nothing has a greater impact than reading aloud. Babies and children love the warmth, intimacy, and familiar sounds and images that make story time so special. Parents can encourage their children’s reading in many ways. Jane Chavez obtained her B.S. degree in home economics from Cornell University and a Master’s degree from the Child Study Institute from the University of Maryland. She served as a 4-H Club Agent with New York State Extension Service and assisted with training Peace Corps volunteers in Brazil. She was an author for Child Development Department of Michigan State Univ, and assited the El Salvador Extension Service program and leadership development in home economics. She is presently an educational consultant having assisted some 14 or more students into being accepted to major universities such as Yale, Stanford, Harvard, Princeton and M.I.T. among many others. Chavez Jesus Jimenez, a freshman at the Uvalde High School, has been accepted as a participant in the Summer Opportunities for the Academically Ready (SOAR) mathematics program at the University of North Texas in Denton.
