There are certain steps which can be followed in reducing the threat of these reptiles. The snakes most common in this area of the state include the western diamond snake, the broad-banded copperhead, and the (cotton-mouth) water moccasin. “The rattlesnake is the most common threat in South Texas. Understanding the environment in which he flourishes and knowing his habits is a good protective measure for residents of this area,” said Dr. Milo Shult, an area wildlife specialist with TAEX in Uvalde. He said all the poisonous snakes in this region of the state share several common characteristics.
