Page 2 EL UVALDE TIMES March 6,1980 Esto Lo Tengo Que Decir! By Olga Munoz Rodriquez This I Have To Say! “I’ve got the 55 gallons of red ink you ordered, but I’m not to unload it until I get paid in cash!” 1979 McNeught Synd.. B A COWARD ISA MERP WITH A WIFE, KIDS AND' , Mortgage --MARVIN KITMAN The case is not closed... Superintendent of Uvalde Schools, Eddie Little told those attending the school board meeting last Tuesday that he had received word that the preliminary findings determined by the investigators from HEW here recently was that the Uvalde was not in violation of Title VI and the District did not discriminate in its employment and promotion practices. He added “as far as HEW is concerned, the case is closed.’’ In my opinion, as long as the board continues its “bury our heads in the sand” policy, the case is not closed. Complaints will continue to be filed, with HEW or with a lawsuit in district court. This school board it taking the same attitude that the school board of April 1970 took-trying to ignore the problems that exist and hoping the problems would go away overnight. The volcano that erupted here in 1970 could very well explode again, if not in a school walkout, in other more expedient and perhaps more taxing experiences for our school officials. Take a close look at the list of those being employed for next year-we will print in in our next issue-and see why we know HEW cannot close the case on Uvalde. Theyd looked so bored.... If you asked me for my impression of the school board meeting last Tuesday I would tell you that the trustees reminded me of six very bored robots that just listened to what Dr. Little told them and half asleep they seem to go about the business of making and seconding motions of the routine business. Somewhere in the back of their minds I am sure they knew that a lot of people in the community were hoping they would face up to the reality that they were firing a good, respected and admired coach, and that they were not even giving him the opportunity to vindicate himself. They ignored all those complaints against Coach John letter to Editor Response to Chick Kazen issues with me and your constituents in the 23rd District. I was suprised that on the one hand you suggest that the voters should judge you on your record and then, on the other hand, you imply that I have been less than honorable in compiling your voting record on important issues. Either you stand on your voting record or you do not! Ferrara, and ignored all the support that has been coming forth for Coach Robert Capello. I ask myself time and time again, “Why do these men pray to the Lord for guidance to do what is best for our children, our community, then cynically ignore this plea for guidance and act so rashly, so unfair?” I looked around and saw all those other people in the audience who are not allowed to make a comment, ask a question on the most important issue on hand. We must all sit there and let Dr. Little conduct the meeting in his cool, methodical way. It’s almost as if there was a cold, glass wall between the board members and their patrons. Cynically, they read out “Item No. 4, Audience to Patrons”, and then pass over it, because they do not really want to listen to anybody. The words just make them look good on paper. How long will we put up with all of this? Wake up, people! Was Mandi Najera a victim?... I attended the funeral services for Armando “Mandi” Najera here in Uvalde last Saturday, Feb. 15. Mandi was sixteen years old when he was injured in a football game in La Pryor, Texas, where he lived and attended high school. They tell me that he was wearing a cracked football helmet, and that the impact he received caused the helmet to pinch his head, lhe injury left him in a comma for four years. Perhaps it was just an accident, but perhaps someone in the school district could have prevented that cracked helmet from being worn by Mandi. Maybe the cracked helmet had nothing to do with the injury, but what was so sad was that the La Pryor school officials never showed much concern for Mandi, even though he died playing for the glory of his school. There w7as not one school official present at Mandi’s funeral, at least not in the services held in Uvalde. May Mandi rest in peace, and may his family find consolation in the memory of a handsome, and strong young man who gave his life for his school. we should be sensitive to the interests and needs of the diverse groups which make up our wonderful country.
