Lopez son of Mr. and Mrs. Julian Lopez of Oak St., received his degree of Juris Doctorate from the University of Texas School of Law last Saturday, May 17, 1980. Lopez is a 1973 graduate of Uvalde High School and a 1977 graduate of the University of Texas at Austin with a Bacherlor of Arts degreee in government. He was graduate with honors from UT. Mr. and Mrs. Julian Lopez and their son Oscar, attended the commencement exercises for Julian’s graduation. They were higly impressed with the beautiful Sunflower Service of the law graduates which was held on the same day at theTexas Swimming Center at UT. Many people may not realize that law graduates at UT do not wear caps and gowns to receive their diplomas. The program for the exercises explained the history behind this. It seems like some 20 years after the University ofTexas was establisheo in 1883, a salesman for a supply company appeared before the senior class and offered to rent the cap and offered to rent their caps and gowns, ac mat time the Law School was in the basement of the Main Building and no one thought to send downstirs hold their decision, and that was—that caps and gowns at such a time were traditional to and representative of the academic school and not the professional school. • With not to much accordance the law students were allowed to appear without caps and gowns and the graduation of law students became even more significant. The class that year adopted the sunflower as the “distinctive insignia” Again a reason was formulated for having chosen that flower:1 ‘The sunflower or genus Helianthus belongs to a family with a world-wide distribution. So, also do the lawyers. As the sunflower always keeps its face turned to the sun, the lawyer turns to the light of justice. The Sunflower Ceremony is held on Commencement Day and is attended only by the senior law students and their nearest relatives or friends. Originally, a sunflower was pinned on the coat lapel of each senior by his best friend. This custom changed, however, and now me Associave Dean of the Law School assumes this res-ponsiblity. Mr. Lopez is now employed with the National Institute for Trial Advocacy and will take his bar exam this summer. ... Julian Lopez, hijo del Sr. y Sra. The event was hosted by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Frank and Maria A. Esiquio Hernandez; Mr. Rex Eubene, Sr., Mr. and Mrs. Cuco Perez; and Mr. and Mrs. Jessie queza, hizo muchos amigos.
