Servicios funerales tuvieron lugar el viernes 28 de Julio para el Sr. Santos Ortiz quien falleció en esta cuidad el martes 25 de Julio. Un rosario para el descanso de su alma fue ofrecido el jueves y el viernes en la Capilla de la Funeraria Mike Esparza.

Summer Building Program
Mr. Paul Curtis, Assistant Superintendent reported on the summer reparations proggram and presented several unexpected problems to the board.

Servicios funerales tuvieron lugar el pasado sabado, 29 de Julio en el Templo Cristiano . acargo del Rev. Archie Martinez a las 5:00 p.m. Servicios de oración tuvieron lugar el 27 y 28 de Julio para el Sr. Saldana en la Capilla de la Funeraria Mike Esparza. El entierro se llevo acabo en el Panteón de Batesville.
El Sr. Saldana falleció a consequencia de un accidente automovilístico en Ocanto, Washington. Le sobreviven su esposa, Petra Saldana y diez hijos, cuatro hermanos, Chali, Amado, Salvador, Jr., y Ruben Saldana; cuatro hermanas, Sofia Hill, Santos P. Saldana, Maria Reina Escobedo, y Sulema Arena, todas de Batesville.

El Sr. Ysidóro Martinez falleció el 2 de Agosto, a las 7:30 de la tarde en el Park Manor Nursing Home a la edad de 99 anos.
El Sr. Martinez residía 119 Mayhew en la ciudad de Uvalde, Texas.

Curtis also reported that another class in a shower was being held at Robb School. The board insturcted him to remodel it (panel and carpet) , but John Loeher emphatically insisted it be done “as cheaply as possible.”

Other additions to the original budget as it was presented at the July 11 meeting included $5,000 for student tuitions and State aid; $1,000 for Architect Services; $5,000 for Region 20 Programs; also approved $9,000 salary for the new position of Bilingual Education Director. This new position is due to change in avail-ablity of Follow Through funds can only be used in the Follow Through Programs.
On the tax equalization matter, the board recorded the fact that no money had been allowed for expenditures for such program in the new budget.
When it came to the $1000 listed on the budget for the Drill Instructor and the new position of Asst. Drill Instructor, the trustees didn’t really seem to know how to agree or disagree. The budget proposed a $500 increase above state schedule for the Drill Squad Instructor and $500 for the new assistant (above the regular teacher’s salary Dr. Arnim closed his eyes and pondered as he suggested another breakdown of the salary, while John Loehr did about the same thing. Another visit was that of Mario Sandoval, editor of the international Catholic Maryknoll magazine from New York City. As part of a journalistic study of the impact that hispanics are making in the United States, he stopped by on his way to interview Judge Jose Angel Gutierrez. Two interesting comments he made is the fact that the Census Bureau now shows that there are 11 million hispanics in the U.S. and this, he beleives is a conservative estimate. He said also that hispanics today are not out demonstrating and shouting for reform as strongly as they were several years ago, but rather are working silently and more concretely for social change. He stated it was interesting to see hispanics establish ties with other latin american countries, and one good result was the help the President of Mexico had given Mexican-Ameri-cans through scholarships to Mexican universities. He quoted Judge Gutierrez as saying, “Its a lot easier for us to go see the President of Mexico, than to visit our President in Washington."
