Jerry Canales, son of Mr. and Mrs. Y.P. Canales, Jr. 853 S. Park distinguished himself not only with a grade point average of 94.24 and numerous honors in high school but made history by being the first Mexican-American from Uvalde to receive an appointment to the United States Military Academy at West Point. Gutierrez the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joselin P. Gutierrez of Uvalde was honored during the LULAC banquet for Outstanding Mexican American Seniors. She is an honor graduate with a grade point average of 90.08 Geraldine was a member of both the National and English Honor Societies and was Art editor of the UHS newspaper, “The Howl”. She wants to enter a career in art or photography but art overrides her other interests. She has been a member of the Art Club and has com- pleted 27 private art classes, working now on her portfolio. she enjoys drawing babies, animals, rare scenery and faces. She won Second Place for a fire prevention poster this year. “My future plans, which are very close, “says Geraldine,” are to marry Hector R. Sanchez, son of Mr. and Mrs. Alfredo Sanchez, Sr.” About her aspirations for the community Geraldine isays, What I would like to provide tor tne community is a better understanding and loving world, if only I could. But I will try my best for my friends and other people alike.” Eliazar Trevino I Eleazar Ruiz Trevino, son of Mr. and Mrs. Luis Trevino, 532 S. Farrar has attended all his twelve years of education in Uvalde, beginning with kindergarden at West Garden School, six years at Robb Elementary, Uvalde Junior High, and four years at UHS. He established his athletic career as soon as he entered junior high where he played football, basketball and track. In high school he earned numerous athletic awards such as All District Corner-back his junior and senior years; reached the State Mile Relay Finals in 1978 and 1979; All District Wingback, senior year; was a member of the Lettermans Club three years and was named LULAC’S 1979 Outstanding Mexican-American Boy Athlete. Athletics is by no means the only field he excells in, having been named to the National Honor Society his senior year, other clubs he was active in were the Future Farmers of America where he received the Greenhand Cont..on page 6. She is the recent recipient of the Uvalde County TSTA Unit Scholarship to Southwest Texas Junior College. During high school Judy was a member of the Medistats, Law Enforcement Club and participated in U.I.L. Literary contests. She has been a member of the Hi-Steppers and was president of the Spanish Club; served in the Student Council and also participated in U.I.L. ews-writing and Feature writing contests. She was Class Editor of her journalism class. Judy is an Honor Graduate and Quill and Scroll Honor Society. Miss Canales attends Sacred Heart Church where she is a lector and was recently appointed as a Special Minister of the Eucharist. She is a member of the CYO (Catholic Youth Organization) and TAM (Tererisian Apostolic Movement). In Cont. on Page 6 Maria 0. Padilla Maria 0. Padilla, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Seferino Padilla, Sr, 747 N. Getty is one of eleven children. She was honored as the Outstanding Mexican-American Athlete by Uvalde’s LULAC this year, and was named Uvalde High School’s Most Athletic Senior Girl. Maria earned athletic recognition in volleyball, basketball and track. She earned honors such as Volleyball and Basketball Honorable Mention Basketball All Tourney Track Letterman, All District Volleyball and Basketball and the Fighting Heart Award of UHS. She was also a member of the Spanish Club, Tri-A Club and was an office aid during her junior and senior years. Maria is ranked in the top half of her class with an 85.5 grade point average. She was a member of the National Honor Society her senior year and helped collect donations during the Easter Seals in 1977. Maria is very proud of her eleven brothers and sisters and very especially her - parents. “They are both two great persons that you look up to,” she says.” two super persons we would never forget throughout our lives. We are one great family, playing, talking, praying together, always communicating. We are always helping each other when someone needs help.” Although she has not decided what career she will pursue in college, her athletic mind, shines through in this advise to the younger generation— “Let Life Last Long-give a hoot, and don’t cheat, be an Athlete.” Cont. on page 6. Ernesto Salazar Ernesto Salazar is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Valentin and Laurentina Salazar of 436 W. Leona. Uvalde High School Principal, Robert Baldwin calls Ernesto Salazar “A real success story” for although his family has migrating to Oregon every spring io worn there, Ernesto has managed to keep up his grades to a satisfactory level. So outstanding are his efforts that despite that fact he consistently had to enter late and withdraw early in the school year, Salazar finished his high school career with a 91.0 average. Ernesto was a member of the French Club during his freshman and sophomore years. He was elected to the English Honor Society as a junior and was a candidate for the National Honor Society. In his senior year he remained in the English Honor Society and elected to the National Honor Society. Throughout his school years"he attended various scholastic contests. His elected subjects were challenging courses such as algebra 1 and 2; Trigonometry, Elementary Analysis and physics. She is the the seventh of eight daughters and in her family and has lived in Batesville most of her life. Mercedes plans to attend Southwest Texas Junior College and would like to become a veterinanrian. Mercedes was a member of the Future Homemakers of America during her freshmen year. TO’ 9VR Cynthia Castro is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ernest T. Castro of 107 W. Knippa. The daughter of a military family, Cy nthia has had to adjust to six different schools throughout her first twelve years of education. She was born at Andrews Air Force Base in Maryland and attended kindergarten to second grade in AI-brook Air Force Base in the Canal Zone. She finished second through fourth grades at Kirtland A.F.B. in New Mexico. Fifth grade found her in Scribner, Nebraska and she finished sixth grade at Offutt A.F.B. in Nebraska. Her seventh and eight grades were taught at Alburquerque, New Mexico. Finally she entered ninth grade at Uvalde High School from which she is graduating. Cynthia has been a member of the National Honor Society and the English Honor Society for two years. She was a member of the HERO Club for two years, being named its treasurer and if-Sweetheart during her senior year. LULAC honored her as the Outstanding Mexican-American Girl In Academics. Miss Castro has worked at the Trinity Lutheran Day Care Center as part of her participation in the Home Economics Co-operative Education program. She plans to attend Southwest Texas Junior College, majoring in Business Administration. Her ultimate goal is to become a Certified Public Accountant. Belinda Ann Puente Laverne Rodriguez Belinda Ann Puente is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jesus Puente of 610 Wimberly St. She was able to maintain a high academic record throughout her high school years and participated in many school activities. A band member for three years, she was secretary her junior year. She was a member of the Student Council her freshman year; class secretary of her junior class, and member of the Junior Historians for two years. Among the honors she received were her being named National Honor for three years, Honor Society , year, Who’s Who American High Students, junior year.
