After considering the pros and cons with each rtaxing option and took into consideration the proposed 79-80 school budget, the •board voted to remove the taxing of automobiles: The income derived from autos, the board deduced, would not offset the manhours and the difficulty in collecting it. Board members Charles Griffin and Ismael Sosa were the only “no” votes. The use of the agricultural use value was unanimously approved. Superintendent Dr. Eddie Little explained to the board that some 100 affected taxpayers had applied for this exemption but had not qualified, neverthless he recommended its approval so that if in the future, a that qualified could receive it. citizen for it Because the legislature has a mandatory homestead exemption $10,000 from market value homeowners 65 years old and older or those who are disabled, and it also provided for a $5,000 exemption (off the market value) to all homeowners, the board voted to repeal a 1976 decision state given of the to ÜSEEtó =»■■ COLEMAN’S SALES Specializing in 4-wheel drive pick-ups 1972 — 1979 OPEN MON— FRI. 9 A.M —6 P.M. It also rescinded its decision to charge taxpayers the portion of taxes that goes to pay off bonded indebtedness (known as the INS portion). Again Little explained the man hours involved in collecting this item was not justified by the income derived. Citizens Commettee Dr. Little recommended that the board reactivate the Citizens Advisory Committee created in 1977 to proved input on the district’s school building needs. Bill Kennedy opposed to this suggestion because he felt the committee should be advised what a new school would cost the taxpayers. Little explained it would not be possible to determine this until the middle of August to see what the district’s total acutal revenue would be and what tax increase would be required for building expansion. The board voted to reactivate the citizens committee with no new members to be added. ly $18,000 and the school district could “break even” and even provide busing for any student who desired to ride the bus. The two problems that may keep the expanded bus services is that three new buses ordered last year have not arrived and they would be greatly needed if the plan wwent into effect Bus delivery have been very slow in the past. Also the fuel allocations would have to be confirmed with the districts distributor to assure adequate gas supply for the new route.
