Baker, Veterinary Edpidemio-logist from the Communicable Center in Georgia, visited Uvalde during the past week and provided technical assistance to personnel of Public Health Region 9. Dr. Baker met with the Regional staff and discussed the rabies outbreak and steps which should be taken to break the chain of infection within the dog popu- lation in Eagle Pass. Disease Atlanta, As of June 22, 1979 some 14 dogs have been identified as having rabies causing 54 persons to undergo rabies post-exposure injections. It is expected that several more dogs will become ill with this fatal disease before the epidemic is controlled. Dr. Baker noted “it has been about 20 days since the last rabies case in Eagle Pass; however, a period of a-bout six months must pass before we can breathe easy in these kinds of outbreaks”. Public Health Region 9 has been involved with the outbreak in Eagle Pass since the first case was identified in a dog in March. Smith of Del Rio was traveling north on Park St. when the stock trailer broke free and traveled north passing the intersection of Pecos and Park St. It then proceeded to leave the roadway traveling on a N.W. direction through the yard of 1403 N. Park St. The stocktrailer came to a stop upon hitting a 1973 yellow oldsmobile owned by John Bradford of Uvalde that was properly parked. Smith was issued a ticket for failure to maintain control.
