Though I usually use this report to comment on Washington activities, I want to change the theme this week to offer information on the trip which our House Armed Services Committee recently took to the Peoples Republic of China. Our Chairman, Melvin Price, felt we should know more about this huge nation of over 900 million people, almost one-fourth of the world’s population, which already has a major role in world affairs. It was very valuable perience.

He made it clear that the Chinese were displeased by our recent Congressional action pledging aid to Taiwan if it is invaded, and was strong in his belief that mainland China should have national controls over Taiwan. He also vigorously advocated unification of North and South Korea, but we got no direct answer when we asked how the Chinese felt about the unified Vietnam, to which they sent military forces after reported border raids Vietnamese.

We watched the 179th division of the Peoples’ Liberation army in field maneuvers, including a fire ‘power demonstration with live ammunition. We saw a three-man team mount a 75 millimeter gun on their shoulders and hit a target 400 meters away. Some of us remembered our mortar firing bazooka of World War II, but here were men serving as artillery mounts. We inspected their weapons and were impressed, but they want to improve and we discussed their desire for technological expertise from our country.

The top officials warned us against the Soviet Union. We reminded them that they had formerly had a friendship treaty with Russia. Their response was that they had that treaty when they considered the United States and Japan as enemies but now our nations are friends and the . enemy is the Soviet Union. I cannot accept their Communist views that all people exist to serve the government, but I must say that they believe this. They are the most motivated people I have ever seen, plowing their fields by hand and moving dirt for big highway projects by men and women carrying baskets on their backs.

Del Rio— The State Highway and Public Transportation Commission approved a
million program highway rehabilitation and improvement in every part of the state.
The program includes rehabilitation work, safety improvements and general betterment of US and State Highways and Farm to Market Roads.
A total of 845 projects in 203 counties are involved with more than 72 percent of the work scheduled for US- and State-numbered ways.

District Engineer Nino Gutierrez of Del Rio said projects included in the program in this area are resurfacing of 33 miles of highways that include sections of US-90 in Uvalde, FM 1022, FM 117, RM 187, and RM 1796 reconstruction of 9 miles of FM 140 from 7.7 miles southeast, of FM 117 to the Zavala county line.
Also included in the program is reconstruction of US 83 from FM 117 at Uvalde, south to Zavala County Line.
LA SEMILLA QUE TIENE PODER
Fue en Rusia, y en una aldea donde se sigue predicando el evangelio con alguna libertad. Había un anciano campesino, cristiano sencillo y fiel que predicaba fogosamente a sus paisanos. Tenía un solo sermón que repetía constantemente, pero tal era su sinceridad y su fe, que conmovía a los oyentes.
Su sermón era sobre la parábola de Jesús: “El Sembrador salió a sembrar”. Siempre que lo predicaba, para dar énfasis a sus palabras, sacaba puñados de trigo de una bolsa que traía consigo, y arrojaba las semillas a los oyentes.
Una vez lo estaba escuchando un hombre intelectual. Un hombre educado en el ateísmo y el materialismo. Un hombre que rechazaba por completo la idea de Dios y del Espíritu. Sin embargo, las palabras del rudo predicador campesino, hicieron impacto en él. Se levantó y se fue a su casa. Siempre pensaba en lo que había dicho el predicador, “que la semilla es la Palabra de Dios, y que la Palabra de Dios tiene poder para dar nueva vida”.
Pasaron varios años. El hombre intelectual, sufrió muchos dolores en la vida. Los sufrimientos doblegaron un tanto su espíritu altanero. Un día, sacó del ropero, el saco que había tenido puesto, aquella noche cuando había escuchado el sermón de la semilla. Al revisar los bolsillos encontró una diminuta semilla de trigo. ¡Había caído allí cuando el predicador la había arrojado!
. Comprendiendo que había en ello un mensaje, el intelectual buscó al predicador. Le dijo que le enseñara más acerca de la Palabra de Dios. Y aceptando la Verdad de Cristo, fue convertido y renunciando al pecado, el materialismo y el ateísmo, llegó a ser él mismo, un predicador del Evangelio.	।
Amigo, la Palabra de Dios, la Biblia escrita y la predicación del evangelio hablada, son semilla de nueva vida. Es semilla que tiene poder. Poder para hacer nacer de nuevo a una persona; poder para I conservarlo en la vida espiritual; poder para darle fuerza en las luchas y en las pruebas; poder para llevarlo a la gloria cuando deje este mundo.

Meeting Announced
