His action was in protest to Commissioner Gilbert Torres' insis-tance that the board allow him to sneak. Commissioner Torres’ address was the first item on the agenda. The first part of his address was concerning the failure of the board to hire Mexican-American teachers and asked if the school district had an Affirmative Action Plan. Mrs. uaiicy explained that Mr. Torres had not requested such a plan before but went on to explain that she felt the board was doing all it could to hire more Mexican-American teachers and that Dr. Eddie Little had plans to go to Texas A & I and Pan American University to recruit more Mexican-American teachers for next year. She stated that this year 68% of the Mexican-American teachers that applied were hired, as compared to 29% of the anglo applicants were hired. She stated also that Elizabeth Knippa had been hired as director of the Follow Through Program at the request of the Follow Through PAC, which was composed of Mexican-American parents. Believe me, it takes a lot of praying to keep my cool at the school board meetings. I really wish more of you would copie to these meetings and see for yourself what a bad atmosphere for parents and concerned citizens our school board continues to provoke. “Good Will Towards Men....” Even though we’re into the Christmas season, our school board showed very bad will toward a concerned citizen, Mr. Gilbert Torres last Tuesday. It was really sad to witness such animozity and prejudice towards an elected official, a respected citizen of this community and a very concerned parent. Mr. Torres had patiently given the board 90 days to answer his requests. He had asked them to hire more Mexican-American teachers and administrators and to have another voting place on the west side of town.
