EL UVALDE TIMES JUNE 7. 1979 PAGE 2____ This I Have To Say By Olga M. Rodriquez Public Concern Is Important The recent floods in our city stir up a lot of concern about the Leona Watershed Project by many local citizens but that concern must be kept alive even after the waters reside and the sun starts shining again. We must accept the fact that the flooding affects ALL the community -Uvalde could become a disaster area if enough rain falls in the danger areas. It could be a real tragedy if for lack of interest lives and property could be lost here. As I rode around taking pictures of the flooded areas I wished that those individuals that are more directly involved with the project were there too and realized the importance of carrying the project along. I wonder if perhaps our U.S. Congressmen shouldn’t be here and witness the flooding so they could push for more federal aid for us. Perhaps our county Judge and Commissioners should demand more attention from the Governor of Texas and our federal legislators. The citizens united in this effort could also help by contacting our congressmen themselves. This generation would be very proud to take credit for the realization of such as important undertaking. The lives of coming generations and the future progress of Uvalde is in our hands. We feel like glue! I’ve arrived at the best description for El Uvalde Times....its like glue. And the more gummier and stickier the better. Yes, with each new edition we put out we come in contact with one more group, one more individual we didn’t know before, and we help get his message across to the rest of the community. We bring people together and the closer we beóome, the more we help each other and learn about each other, the better for everyone. We are proud to help our city, especially in creating a better understanding among individuals. While our editorials sometimes venture into the previously unmentionable.... maybe they are a little strong... we want our readers to know we speak sincerely and will respect different opinions! The Leona Floods Again Continuing heavy rains in the area caused the Leona River and Cook Slough to overflow again last Tuesday, flooding several residences on Elizabeth Street on the west and threatening to flood many residences on the northeast of the city. It was feared Tuesday morning that the river was carrying even more water than the last flood in August of last year. Residents along the river began removing their belongings and moving to higher ground early Tuesday morning. The river was expected to crest by 11 a.m. but the clean-up job of the riverbed apparently helped move the water more rapidly through and the northeast was saved. The Charles Place Apts, near the high school had water within a foot of their doorways. Mrs. Julia Guajardo of 229 Elizabeth Street (by Cook Slough) husband passed away last month found water entering her home at 6 a.m. and had to remove her furniture. The linoleum on her floor and a recently purchased water heater were some of her major losses. The Guajardo resi -dence is in a line of houses purchased by the city of Uvalde in preparation for the Leona Watershed.Project. An eighty foot wide channel along Cook Slough is planned which will extend from the Ft. Clark Rd. crossing to Highway 83. According to Uvalde County Judge Jerry White the Leona Watershed Project is very much alive and moving. Howard Langford, former Uvalde Mayor is representing the county in the negotiating of the necessary leasemen ts in those areas where the U.S. Sail Conservation engineers have determined are the best locations for the three proposed dam sites to the north of the city. ‘The landowners i have talked to so far have been very receptive to the project” said Langford. “There are several others we need to talk to and one in particular is a large property that would have a dam down the middle of productive farmland. We can understand the concern of the owner and have been working to re-route that dam site. All this takes considerable time but the project is definitely moving along." The City of Uvalde in the other hand, lacks about five lease-ments to complete their part of the initial project. The Commissioners Court will meet Monday at 10 a.m. but the Leona Watershed Project is not on the agenda. Howdy Coffee Wednesday All new Uvalde businessmen and women received invitations this week to attend a "Howdy Coffee” to be held at the Kincaid I x.otel. The “Howdy Coffee’ is scheduled for Wednesday, June 13, at 10a.m. Sponsoring the coffee is the Roadrunner Club of the LJyalde Chamber of Commerce The coffee is planned to be informal and “Howdy Coffee” man, Charles Raine urges all business people of Uvalde to drop by and meet Uvalde’s newest business associates. I loved seeing the picture of the kindergarden students from Sacred Heart School. You see, I attended that program since I was visiting Uvalde that week. A pupil, David Anthony Mata was in it and wore a Blue Bird Costume. He is my nephew. To Rev. David Zumaya and Sister Teresa Perez, my sincere congratulations on a job well done in directing it. I am sure that all the parents, relatives, and friends that saw the program must be as pleased and as greatful as I am. The Lord Bless Them. i I came to to my home town to see an aiint of my husband who is sick at Memorial Hospital. Many people from here know her since she has made many dresses for weddings, parties, etc. My week here was spent at the home of my cousins, Cuca and Johnny Martinez. My heartfelt thanks to them for their wonderful hospitality. Sorry I did not get to come by your office for a visit to meet you but God willing, I’ll do my best next time I come. 278-361 6*278-3061 “EL UVALDE TIMES” is ; published weekly in Uvalde Texas.
