El Boon Slough esta'al Cont. on Pg. 3 The Honorable Henry B. I’m like those people with the bumper sticker fcTd rather be fishing’ — this beautiful sunshine has me dreaming of picnics, camping and just plain driving around our beautiful countryside! I’ll be very happy when this muggy winter weather is gone for good. THE CIVIL RIGHTS REPORT While there may have been some considerable improvement in the way of bettering educational opportunities for Mexican-American students here since the findings of the recent Civil Rights report were gathered, we all know there is still room for more improvement. Since I am known as a concerned individual in the education al system here, I receive a lot of calls from parents who have suffered one injustice after another. Unjust suspensions is just one of them. I have witnessed how some teachers rough up our children in shook and I know of a lot of Mexican-American athletes who have been bypassed in the honors they deserved. I could go on and on. And whatsmore, the report from the Civil Rights Commission will probably not cause any major change here. It takes Washington 5 to 10 years to take any real action. Its all up to us as parents and school administrators to solve our own problems on our own. That’s is why I will continue to voice complaints and offer whatever help I can— not to create problems , but to seek solutions through open dialogue. There is a lot of good in our school system, but there is still a lot of discrimination and we must continue to work to eliminate the word from our history books. Commercial Garbage Service Offered Have you complained about trash pick ups lately? Seems like you may not be the only one since a group of citizens that participated in two Chamber of Commerce work sessions here recently expressed the same concern and an alternative method of garbage collection may be on the way. Mr. R. A. The Council agreed to allow Mr. Smith to begin his preliminary study in the city but Mayor Cain advised this in no way committed the council to its approval at this time. Continued on Pg 4
