■O r < « March 14,1992 < -> # W 1 it# ' • r < EL UVALDE TIMES Page 8_________________________________________________________ This I Have to Say.______________(Cont'd from Page 2) we hear is “when the Mexican-American community is needed we are always there. When it comes time to be treated fairly, we are always ignored.” The Uvalde Chamber of Commerce may be encouraged to operate differently if an alternative organization for Mexican-American owned businesses were to be formed—one that is more relevant to the ever growing hispanic population here. We have a new superintendent.... The ball is now in John Harrell’s court. What kind of leader will he make? Will he really turn the Uvalde school district around? Will he make the difficult but necessary changes needed to create pride in teaching again? Three principals in the Uvalde schools were highly praised publicly by parents and teachers. First it was Uvalde Junior High Principal Gayle Watkins and Vice-Principal Maria Martinez. Then Rex Jackson was tremendously praised by parents and students at Batesville and he agreed to move back as principal there at the community’s strong request. These are the kind of principals we need. Have the other principals, who have been at their jobs longer ever received such esteem, such praise? Shouldn ’ t we encourage the other principals to become as loved and respected as these three? Should we expect anything less? Let’s hope that Mr. Harrell will find the wisdom, the conviction, the courage to do what has to be done for the benefit of our students— for fair and equal treatment of teachers, for fair and proper use of our hard earned tax dollars. If there are some unnecessary positions in the central office, some that may have been created to provide this or that person a job, lets be fair and cut costs where needed. All administrative positions should be seriously evaluated to make sure they are productive and essential. Teacher evaluation must be truly objective and friendship and family connections should not be a factor on how a teacher is appraised. On issues presented by parents, I trust Mr. Harrell to be a better superintendent. Too often small problems are drawn out of proportion because they are brought before the board. Seems to me an effective superintendent should make sure those smaller issues and complaints are resolved with some common sense decisions and fair treatment of those concerned instead of ignoring them. Let’s gel some good women on the school board... We have an unbalanced situation on the Uvalde school board. There aren ’ t any women on it and we need some; some that will really take the job seriously and give good direction to the superintendent. Too often I hear the excuse that the board cannot tell the superintendent how to run the school system. Hogwash! They are elected to run the school system. They are responsible for an efficient and productive system. They hire the superintendent and the school personnel. Lately I have been particularly impressed with President Frank Hidalgo and his sincere efforts to hear the patrons adequately and for his deep concern for the success of the students through parental involvement. Michael Boyle seems to be the one that consistently does his homework and tries to put all issues being discussed into some perspective, with great efforts at the common sense approach. The others seem sincerely interested in the issues presented but do not express much understanding for the most part. While we appreciate their dedication at holding such a difficult public office, when the future of our community is at slake, we need every board members more deeply involved in the issues that confront us. I really believe there are some good dedicated “common sense” women out there that would make good board members.. Please don’t abuse the privilege... I have been one to complain about patrons not being heard at school board meetings. For a long time I have insisted that a larger meeting room be provided. The board has heard the complaints and now the meetings are held at the spacious and comfortable Junior High Library. Now it seems that some patrons are abusing the privilege of speaking before the board. The sex education issue has been dragged out to the point of frustration. The board in general agrees with the parents who have been attending the board meetings regularly. I have been present at many meetings where parents were rudely treated by the board, cutting short their presentations; delegating the solution to their problem to the superintendent and leaving the parents wondering if their appearance before the board was really worth the hassle. Two of the women presenting their concern over sex education have been heard far more than the any other group has been heard. One of the women kept interrupting president Hidalgo several times, trying to raise her voice over his. I kept wondering when he was going to use his gavel. Please don’t abuse the precious time of the board members and the general public. Letters to the Editor Welcome!
