El Uvalde Times EL UNICO PERIODICO BILINGÜE EN EL WINTERGARDEN THE ONLY BILINGUAL NEWSPAPER IN THE WINf EKG ARDEN AREA ' ""‘A • - '--V-1 • Vol. Ill, No. 63 621 W. Main St. Uvalde, Texas 78801 April 26, 1979 Archbishop Francis J. Furey February 22, 1905-April 23, 1979 This I Have To Say Olga M. Rodriguez We Need Roller Skates! El Uvalde Times needed roller skates or some other speedy means of getting to different places in a short time this weekend. There were so many events we wanted to cover our heads got a little dizzy. Let no one say there is nothing to do in Uvalde. There arc activities here for every member of the family, for the quiet and the nosiy, the fast and the slow, the jazzy and the quaint. Just to name a few of the ones i was involved in, -- there was the American Legion 21st District Convention, the Department of Hifman Resources Area Softball Tournament, (Uvalde won); the Fourth Annual International Festival of Sacred Music, the first dance with Machismo at the new Uvalde Amusement Center, and not to mention the bridal and baby showers, birthday parties and all those other social and family type gatherings. We are one live and active community! May You Rest In Peace, Bishop Furey Although my first and last conversation with the late Bishop Furey was a disheartening one for me, I remember best the time that he took time to listen to the problem we had here during the school walkout in 1970 and he sincerely tried to help both the Mexican-American parents and the school administrators. He wanted to serve as a mediator between the two parties and help settle the situation for the best of all. The school administrators flatly turned down his request for a meeting, but Bishop Furey’s concern for our children and this community was evident and we will always remember that. In Young Woman’s Death Murder is obviously suspected in the death of a 24 year old Uvalde woman whose body was found in an open field near Batesville last Monday afternoon.
