Canales' attended Plebe Parent
Ballet Folklórico
Week at West Point
Mr. and Mrs. Y. P. Canales, Jr. of 835 S. Park in Uvalde recently returned home after attending Plebe Parent Week at West Point Mili-T ary Academy in New York where their son, Jerry is a cadet. Jerry is a 1979 Uvalde High School Graduate who received a congressional appointment to the academy. Follwoing is an interest-ting account of life at West Point and the meaningful experiences of the Canales family as members of West Point’s Class oi 83 as told by Mrs. Mary Cannales.
At the mention of West Point, most of us immedialtely form a mental scene of a USMA Cadet in his dress uniform and his bucket hat, and an impressive pomp of a Cadet Parade,” or perphaps of Cadet social activities such as a formal military ball.
While these are accurate views of a West Point scene, there is another much more obvious but vaguely publicised side to Academy Life. The military and Academic activities have a major key role at the United States Military Academy. The full impact of these activities are demonstrated in the Corps of Cadets. Without the military and academic activities, West Point would cease to exist.
A special program is planned by the Acedemy for Plebe Parents, relatives, and friends of the freshman class so they can get a chance to tour the Academy and get a first-hand view of cadet life. In essence the specific purpose of Plebe Parent Weekend activities is to introduce to parents the true heritage of the “Long Grey Line,” which emphasises the military and academic curriculum related to the training and instruction of each cadet during Plebe year.
We learned that Plebe life at the academy is basic individual training designed to prepare the cadets to take their place in the Corps of Cadets. This is one of the most streneous and intensified periods of tranining the Cadet will encounter while at the Academy.
The four years of Academic education and military training are designed to develop those qualities of Character and physical competence needed to become a commissioned combat officer serving in a postion of responsibility.
Academic curriculum standard courses provide a fundamental foundation in mathematics, science, engineering, social sciences, and the humanities.
In academic studies, the related courses of instruction, the methods of instruction and the instructional facilities are desgned so that each individual Cadet can progress at his own level of ablility. Small classes, high standards of scholarship and stressed mental discipline are emphasized by the Academy.
During summer military training, cadets apply and test those skills and principles presented in the classroom environment. Classroom military subjects, consist of instruction in military heritage, map reading and basic unit tactics.
Typical daily schedules in extracurricular activities for a cadet also include physical education intermural and intercollegiate athletics.
The scope of leadership exercised by the cadets is one of the best indications the extent to wrhich West Point indeed does belong to its young men and women.
During Plebe Parent Week, all the upperclass cadets leave the academy for their “Spring Break”, giving the Plebes an important opportunity to practice the leadership techniques learned and developed during the year and providing one of their final tests of accomplishments during Plebe year, a deep sense of accomplishment and the joy of surmounting an enormous challenge await the young man and woman with the ability to succed at West Point. The Academy offers today, as it has since the nations early days, a unique opportunity for achievement, responsibility, honor and service. The programs is still too demanding to be right for everyone. But

EL JUEZ RUDY ESQUIVEL, candidato a Juez de la Cuarta Corte Civil de Apelaciones y a la cual corresponde Uvalde, estuvo en Uvalde el pasado jueves por la noche en una reunion de la legión Arieiicana. Esquivel busca el puesto ahora ocupado por el Juez Robert Murray, quien fue nombrado a ese puesto por el anterior Gobem.idor Dolph Briscoe. Esquivel dijo que el toma gran intere* un servir a la gente y que su mayor deseo es que la gente vea la Corte como un amigo y no enemigo de la gente.

Uvalde is indeed proud of Jerry Canales and his parents. In Jerry’s accomplishments is a very accomplishments other students in Uvalde can see that it is possible to grasp those goals which seem so unreachable, if we just prepare ourselves and be strong in our determination to succeed. His parents also show us how far a person can go if he has the encouragement and support of his parents. How many good minds have been cut short because given support ment?

“We feel that Plebe year is pretty much behind us now” says Mrs. Canales. ‘‘It has been a
year filled with excitement, pride and joy. As plebe parents this has indeed been a most rewarding experience which will forever remain in our hearts. We are extremely proud of Jerry's accomplishments at West Point. We share with our son his pride in being a West Point Cadet, pride in beloning to the Class of 1983, pride in his strength and courage to conquer the challenges of Plebe life. But most of all, for those who are ready, the rewards will last a lifetime.
As a Plebe Jerry has been placed in avanced classes his two academic semesters at the Academy. During Plebe-Parent week he was selected as First Cadet in his platoon and First Cadet in his squadron. Also, he served as squad leader, in charge of eleven cadets druing week long activities. These are special assignments of achievement and responsibilities awarded to outstanding cadets.

El Comité de fiestas de Uvalde tendrá una junta muy importante este domingo a las 3 de la tarde en las oficinas de El Uvalde Times. El Presidente Jerry Carrasco urge a todos los miembros que asistan y se hace una cordial invitación a nuevos miembros que asistan.

A scholarship benefit dance, sponsored by the Faculty Association at Southwest Texas Junior College, will be held on Friday, April 11, at the Uvalde Civic Center.

Paul Rich, candidato al Congreso de los Estados Unidos del Distrito 23 al cual Uvalde pertenece y que aparecerá en la balota de las primarias Demócratas el 3 de Mayo estuvo en Uvalde el martes pasado y visito el centro El Milagro. Rich dice que el se interesara por ayudar a los ancianos y personas de ganancias fijas. Rich es considerado como un liberal muy a favor del trabajador. Su contrincante es el Congresista Chick Kazen de Laredo quien ocupa ese puesto por muchos anos. Con Rich aparece un miembro del centro y el Comisionado Gilberto Torres.
Uvalde classroom teachers overflowed into the narrow hallway that leads into the school board meeting room last Tuesday, April 8. The teachers are members of the Uvalde County Chapter of TSTA and presented reports that show only top administrators have received local increments in the last ten years.

This year’s Faculty Association Scholarship recipient is Phil Gorman of Uvalde. The Faculty Association hopes to raise enough money to increase the number of scholarships available to two.
The cost of the dance, to be paid at the door, is $5 per person.
