Grow Your Own Vegetables
Jerry and Jane Chavez grew up with families that had a vegetable garden each year; Jane in the Mohawk Valley in upstate New York and Jerry in the Rio Grande Valley in New Mexico.
Since arriving in Uvalde in 1974, the Chavez family has produced high quality vegetables in their spring and fall gardens. Gardening is a family affair. Everyone is involved in planning which vegetable to plant, soil preparation, planting and trans-planting, fertilizing, -hoeing, insect and disease control, harvesting, preparation of vegetables for meals, canning and freezing.

It takes a lot of hard work, some technical know-how and dedication. What are some of the benefits of gardening to individual or family? Gardening saves on the family budget, provides responsibilities for children and above all, the satisfaction of growing your own tasty vegetables.

The Chavezes are always sharing tips on gardening, vegetable recipes, plus canning and freezing information. For several years, they have conducted educational tours of their vegetable garden, fruit trees and backyard for neighbors, elementary school students, teacher, and aides. Information on gardening has also been shared with Special Education teachers.
