Local Attorney Addresses New Americans By JOHN CARROLL Courtesy of Del Rio News Herald Voters Will Decide Alcohol Banning Petitioners from every cor-nr of earth jammed the U. S. District Courtroom here Thursday afternoon to take the final steps toward becoming United States citizens. In the largest single naturalization ceremony held so far in Del Rio, D. W. Suttle, U. S. District Judge for the Western District of Texas approved the applications for citizenship of 65 new Americans. As relatives and friends waited outside the courthouse or on the benches lining the corridor walls, the petitioners sat quietly in the court spectators gallery7 waiting for their proud moment. Most of the faces in the courtroom were of Spanish and Indian origin, but an occasional set of Oriental features or a decidely European countenance showed the mixture of nation-alitites who wished to become members of the United States republic. Before beginning the ceremony, Judge Suttle introduced the federal court staff to the petitioners and acknowled= ged the guests. Gen. and Mrs. Samuel L. Myers received special recognition as the sponsors of this class of citizens. As Jim B. Clute, the naturalization examiner called the names on the petitions recommended for approval each announced he was presenta and gave his place of birth. The expressions on the faces changed from nerv ousness to relief as each name was called, assuring everyone that he had not somehow been overlooked No one answered when the judge asked if any present was unwilling to pledge allegiance to the U.S. flag. After the entire court stood and recited the familiar pledge, the judge declared that the motion that all petitioners be granted citizenship was approved. All the applicants replied in the affirmative when federal district clerk Dorothy Haynes asked if they renounced allegiances to any foreign flag or prince and swore to bear true faith to the United States. Each vowed to bear arms in the national defense or to perform work of national importance, if circumstances should require. Then the official proceedings were over. “Congratulations, ” said Judge Suttle. “You’re now U.S. citizens, with all the rights and even the burdens that other citizens have.” “Let me remind you,” the judge continued, “you’re not second-class citizens but full citizens with all the rights and even the burdens that other citizens have. The only thing you can’t do that natural citizens can do is become president.” Rogelio F.
