Undocumented Workers Recover Wages
Trabajadores Sin Documentos Recobran Sueldo
Payday was a long time coming for two undocumented workers who found themselves working under semi-slavery conditions here in Uvalde a year ago and fled for their lives.
Pascual Moreno Meza of Durango and Estevan Tovar Perez of San Luis Potosi, Mexico will be receiving the wages they were entitled to since July 1978 after they acquired legal aid and filed suit against Uvalde rancher Jesse Raney.
The settlement of the case was announced by Attorney H. Clyde Farrell of the Texas Legal Rural Aid office in Crystal City last Tuesday who represented the men. Raney paid Moreno $2,000 and Tovar $1,000. In addition he paid the court costs and some attorney’s fees.

Raney was accused of violating the Fair Labor Standards Act by contracting the plaintiffs at less than $2.65 per hour. He was also accused violating the Thirteenth Amendment and of assault and battery, forced labor and false imprisonment. The case was filed in the U. S. District Court for the Western Disctrict of Texas in Del Rio.
Moreno and Tovar worked for Raney for about two months without pay and they accused Raney of threatening them with a pistol whenever they asked for their pay or complained about working conditions.
The men said Raney would leave them at the ranch for days without food. At one time he locked them up in a house and threatended them with

Concilio Aprueba Areas de Anexacion
The upcoming shcool board election will go down in history as one of very little interest. It really baffles me that a city of our size and our potential just doesn't care very much about the school situation. Or could it be people arc too afraid to get involved? Or maybe content with the way things are? Or maybe afraid to be hurt by speaking out or being candidates? Praise to the candidates who did come forth and may the winnerd have good intentions for our childrens future. The least we can do now is go out to vote Saturday and give them our support-and show we care! And to those ,who might decide to be concerned about how our school system shapes the education our children receive—I encourage them to attend the school board meetings, there is a lot to learn there.
Annexation, Finally!
Hat’s off to the Planning and Zoning Committee and the Uvalde City Council for finally moving ahead with the annexation program. You all were a little slow but nevertheless have moved along. I know of a lot of citizens especially in the Burns Addition who will be happy to be part of the city, who are willing to pay taxes so that they can look towards a future of lighted and paved streets (they’ve breathed enough dust!) and the protection of city ordinances. TIENEN QUE VOTAR EL SABADO!
La próxima elección de la directiva escolar el sábado pasará a la historia como una de muy poco ánimo. Me asombra tanto que en una ciudad de nuestro tamaño y posibilidades,simplemente no existe el interés debido a los asuntos de las escuelas. Podría ser que la gente tiene miedo envolverse? O tal vez están contentos con la condición de la educación aquí? O tendrán miedo perder su posición económica o social al ser candidatos? Mi admiración va para los que se han puesto como candidatos (aunque realmente mucha gente esta como yo. que no conoce a los candidatos)ojala que los candidatos ganadores tengan buenas intenciones para el futuro de nuestros hijos. Lo menos que nosotros podemos hacer es salir a votar y mostrar que si nos interesa. Madrid (Especial) El abogado de San Antonio, Texas, Ruben Sandoval, ha traido a Madrid espeluznantes alegatos de violaciones Estadounidenses a los derechos humanos de la población chicana, con la historia comprobada de 25 casos de muertes violentas a manos de policías estadounidenses, en su mayoría.
De los documentados “dossiers", Ruben Sandoval, pausado, sin odio en la voz, grueso y calmo, espiga algunos casos a modo de ejemplo.
—El 24 de julio de 1974—afirma Ruben Santos Rodríguez, un chamaco de 12 anos, fue asesinado de un tiro, cuando permanecía esposado en el interior de un coche policial.

La petición de que el Burns Addition fuera anexado a la ciudad fue iniciada por el Comisionado Gilberto Torres en nombre de los ciudadanos que pertenecen a su pre-cincto. Esta petición causo' que la ciudad estudiará la posibilidad de anexar otras áreas de la ciudad. Catorce áreas en todos lados de la ciudad fueron propuestas al concilio por la Comisión de Planificación y Zonea-miento y han estado bajo estudio desde entonces.
