The district manager for the census in this area, Arnold J. Garcia says, "We’re counting on you to answer the census and, although the Census Bureau wanted the questionnaires to be returned on April 1, we’ll still accept them. If the questinnaires are not returned shortly, census takers must call, and that will add to the cost of the census to taxpayers." The manager adds that the census is meant to reflect the count of everyone on April 1. Anyone who has moved into your household since that date should not be listed on your questionnaire. Anyone who has moved away who was a resident on April 1 should be listed. Most questions can answered by blacking the small circles with ordinary lead pencil, the yellow instrucion guide that came with the questionnaire is followed, the task will be simple. Also enclosed with the questionnaire was a brown envelope for mailing it back. It is addressed and requires no postage. City hears request for extra trash pickup; Volunteer clean up Mr. Tony Mr. men the newly J.D. were “The Beautify Texas Council was formed by Governor Clements to do exactly as it’s name implies- to beautify our state, Texas" the Uvalde City Council was told last Tuesday by Johnson and Goode. The representing organized Uvalde Beaui-fication Commission. A one-day volunteer super trash pick-up was proposed by the representatives. Goode called for a "grand sweep of the whole town." After some discussion Councilman Studer suggested zoning the city for a trash pick-up possibly a fee would be charged if a call-for-trash pick-up service were installed. Much discussion was presented in trying to balance the people on set incomes having to pay a fee and on Uvalde’s maintenance as a whole. Mayor Cain expressed that it would have to be looked on as a whole city instead of on an individual basis. "If we don’t do something now, where will we go from here? Where will we be in two years?’’ asked Goode." We’ll help you get back on a current basis so that you, the City, can take it from here." The Council agreed to take the recommendation under consideration and take action on the matter at a later meeting. A roomful of young ladies headed by Mrs. Limones were in to represent the Ladies Softball Groups. The council approved the motion to planned designate the southwest corner field of the baseball complex as the Ladies Softball Field, to be used only by such groups. Other regular monthly business discussed by the Council were: *The Council discussed the possibilities of selling or trading the 97 acre tract south of sewer farm. This land was to be used as a Sanitary Land Field Development but the soil was found to be not as absorbent of water as it should be for such a development. The Council entertained a motion to make alternations of the City Manager’s office at City Hall. It was decided to advertise for bids before coming to any decisions. The approval of the purchase of another pump for sewer farm was given. In the past sewer farm has had three pumps. After one wore down, it was never replaced. pumps. After one wore down, it was never replaced. At the Countywide Tax Appraisal Board meeting held March 31, a question was raised as to whether the city would be interested in an expansion of the duties of the Tax Appraisal Board to include tax collection. The Council voted to approve such action. The Council considered several applications for the job of Assitant City Manager but since none of the applicants had been screened nothing was decided. An approximation of salary for such job is between $1200-1500 range.
