This I Have To Say By Olga Rodriquez Need Another Head.... Has anybody out there got an extra memory bank I can borrow? There *s the talk about the new high school we will be voting on November 10. Do I think we need it? Yes, BUT we need another one of those town meetings like we had at the Civic Center with the last bond election. People need the opportunity to ask questions, give opinions, and feel that they are apart of the decision process. Some people feel the Citizens Advisory Committe was “hand-picked" to say what the administrators and the school board wanted it to say. Others say we need improvement on the quality of education more than on buildings. But let's face it, we need the buildings at the same time we need to improve the curriculum. What is important now is the total involvement of the community, especially the parents. Become informed and become active in all those important events that affect our children's education! Publicity Complaints... I received several calls this week asking me to look Vnto some cases of wrongdoing that the other local wwspaper is not expected to publicize or will report Wth prejudice. One complaint was of how a young ^texican-American boy was put on the front page of We Uvalde Leader NeW3 after being charged with robbing a grocet ? store. One of the arresting Uvalde officers, Lt. "RfFL. Montgomery is in the picture escorting the young man. On an inside page, there is a story of Montgomery being found guilty m United States District Court of assisting an alien. Superficial investigation told me he was charged with “aiding and abedding" an illegal alien and that he admitted being guilty. It is this kind of news reporting that led me to establish El UvaldeTimes. We Mexican-Americans are tired of being “blown up'' in the newspapers as the only criminals around. ABOUT THOSE THEFT CASES.... We have heard about the FBI investigations going on at both First Savings and Loan and the First State Bank of Uvalde and which of course means either theft, embezzlement or some kind of serious crime is suspected. According to the local police department the FBI and some bank oficiáis, nothing can be said until charges are filed. If the banks choose, they may not file charges at all. We all know it will probably depend on who the guilty party is. COACHES, TEACH THEM SPORTSMANSHIP..... Another tip of the week was the complaint of one citizen who noticed how the City is having to raise our tax rate to accomodate among other expenditures some $21,000 for the concrete lining of a drainage ditch near Dalton School, yet when Commissioner Gilbert Torres and Pablo Luna have asked the Council to cover up the dirty, weed covered drainage along the south side of Jardin de Heroes Park, they were told there wasn't enough money. The residents that live in front of that ditch have been there many more years than those across from the drainage near Dalton. States will have until December 15, 1979 to notify elderly and disabled food stamp users that they may be eligible for increased benefits. In making the announcement, Foreman noted that the elderly and disabled who are already using food stamps will need to apply for the increased benefits at the local food stamp office. “The new rule is particularly timely now,” Foreman said, because the increased benefits they will receive, if they apply and if they’re eligi-bile, will help these families offset the increased costs of heating their homes this winter. Public Law 96-58, enated acted August 14, amended the Food Stamp Act of 1977 to allow decuctions for monthly medical expenses exceeding $35 and shelter costs exceeding 50 percent of adjusted income, for all persons aged 60 and over and recipients of supplemental Security Income or disability benefits under Title II of the Social Security Act. Prior to this amendment, the 1977 Food Stamp Act Eliminated medical deductions and placed a limit of $90 a month on the amount of shelter costs households could claim. As a result of the 1977 Food Stamp Act, several million persons with higher incomes received food stamp * benefits, or had their food stamp benefits terminated. “ A significant number of those whose benefits will reduced were the elderly and disabled,” Foreman said. Dios los acompañe Siempre: JUAN PABLO II Letter to the Editor Uvalde Coaches criticized.... October 10, 1979 Dear Editor I am writing this letter in regards to an incident that occurred at a football game on Thursday, October 4th, 1979. The game was played between Eagle Pass JV and Uvalde JV in Uvalde. After the game, the Eagle Pass Players and parents felt humiliated and embarre-ssed when our kids were left on the field with their hands extended to congratulate the Uvalde players, however, the Uvalde players were rushed off the field by the Coaches. I think that this action was very “cheap” on the coaches part. If this is the kind of respect that the Uvalde Coaches are teaching your students, I feel sorry for them and their parents. After the game our Coaches could only shake hands wi^i one, of the offficials. I truly feel sorry for you the parents and fans to allow such incidents to occur. Eagle Pass teams might not win all its football games, but our Coaches and parents feel proud of our students. They teach our students to enjoy the game and show respect and friendship towards others. What was witnessed during the game was embarrassing to us as visiting parents and maybe more so to some of your players4 parents, especially when your Coaches would slap the players on their helmets whenever they did something wrong. I don't feel winning deserves or necessitates such treatment. Our parents also like to see our kids win, but not at the expense of being mistreated in front of the public. Uvalde has always been know for winning tradition, bvut never for its Coaches showing disrespect to others. My husband participated in sports in Uvalde, along with my brother and brother-in-laws and during their participation never were they mistreated in front of their parents and friends. They were taught to be respectful and well-mannered towards their competitors. Maybe the educational philosophy has changed in Uvalde since our time, however, I cannot believe such a change could occur. Sports are part of the educational process and we need our kids to learn to participate in them as a learning experience. In Closing, I want to wish the Uvalde Football teams a very successful season. May God keep your kids away from serious injuries and that your Coaches will WAKE UP and start treating the kids like human beings. PARENTS WAKE UP!!!
