November 9, 1991 EL UVALDE TIMES Page 7 Kolinek's Debate Class Exciting for Students By Sandra Romo Getting a student so dedicated to a school assignment that she is willing to work night and day on it is one of the best lessons a teacher can teach her students. These past few weeks, I've had the opportunity to learn this valuable lesson. I am a student of Karen Kolinek's Introduction to Speech class. This is the first year that Uvalde High School offered this particular class. About three weeks ago, teacher informed us that would be embarking on journey of debate. You could see the fear in all fifteen of our faces. Not all of us really knew too much about debate and so just hearing the word scared us to death. We took a couple of days to decide on a topic that we would be able to debate. We finally decided on a current. has our we the Do you have a high school diploma? If not, you may warn « G.E.D. G.E.D. means "general educational development". Some people call it the "high school equivalency test". It is a group of tests to show if you hve skills of most high school graduates. The five tests are: •Writing Skills •Social Studies •Science •Interpreting literature and the arts •Mathematics. For the writing skills test you will need to write an essay. Our resolution read: Should the UCISD School Board change the present hair code to one which allows difieren t/non-conservative hairstyles? The big day finally came...October 25lh, our first debate. It was one of the most exciting and scary experiences I've ever had. The negative team won the first debate, but there was still the re-debate, that took place on October 30th. At first, I thought it would be hard to get my group organized again and to raise spirits, but I Then Get Ready! The tests are not easy. You may want to go to a class. Many times classes are free, but you may need to buy the books. If you can't attend class, you can study on your own. For about $10 you can buy a G.E.D. book at a bookstore to help you. The book gives you sample problems to work on. Get a G.E.D.! It’s a good step to: •Getting a job •Getting a better job •Or even going to college. I have a child who I must always keep inside my home becuase the other day she was almost run over by a car that was going very fast, and she wasn't even on the street. We met each night at a different team members' home to work until we nearly fell asleep. When Wednesday came around, we were ready to win. We were confident and we were prepared. All in all, our hard work and dedication paid off and we won the second debate. Winning the debate didn't mean a guaranteed "A" or some kind of wonderful prize, but it did mean knowing that we could do it. It meant that hard work can make any plain old average student a winner.
