Uvalde School Teachers confront School Board Administrators' Salaries Questioned Over seventy Uvalde public school teachers showed up with cool but firm determination to tell the school board its about time they got a raise. Teachers filled the small meeting room at the districts administration office last Tuesday night, April were walls while 8. Many of them pinned against the for lack of space others sat on the carpeted floors, stood in the hallway that led room unable to the room. Many narrow into the see into The appearance of Joe Priest, Junior High School science teacher and spokesman for the Uvalde Chapter of the Texas State Teachers Association, was not listed in the agenda posted by the school dis-district at the Uvalde Courthouse bulletin board nor on the agenda given to the news media. The copy of the agenda given in advance to the board members did show that Joe Priest was to the to the pre- appear on behalf of the teachers. El Uvalde Times questioned Superintendent Eddie Little about this and his first reply was that at the time he had prepared the agenda he did not know of teacher’s request appear. He stated agenda had been pared between Monday and Wednesday, March24 25 and 26. When we advised we had a copy of the letter he wrote to Joe Priest dated March 25 that he had been placed on the agenda of the April 8 meeting, he said the public had been amply notified with the words “Audience to Patrons” in item No. IX and that that was all that was required by law. Priest told the board that in a recent study of the Trends and Practices of local salary schedules, it was revealed that in the past 10 years, the only change in classroom teacher’s salaries was a decrease of $100. “An interesting illustration of the effect of this,” he said, ‘‘is to look at today’s salaries in terms of 1970 dollars. Considering the Consumer Price Index put out by the Department of Labor, Bureau of Statistics, the classroom teacher, even with state increments, is making $1900 dollars less than he was in 1970.” “The state provides step increases for increased competence gained through experience” he continued. ‘ ‘This is not meant to keep up with inflation. In fact, it would take approximately a 31% increase in current base just to return the same buying power we had in 1970.” “In order to quality teachers, attract more, we have something to offer. There are several things that the district can do among these are: provide health insurance, better leave provisions, provide bonus pay for graduate hours above Bachelor’s keep and must and Master’s degrees, in short, provide a motive for excellence,” he added. The strongest complaint from the teachers is that in the past ten years the district has given enumerable raises for administrative positions while neglecting the need of increments of the classrqom teacher. Priest presented an analysis of the pay raises given by the / U.C.I.S.D. between 1970 an 1980.
