Page 3 JANUARY 24,1980 Uvalde Jay cees Honored The Uvalde Jaycees hut was a bustling scene as representatives from the Eagle Pass Chapter and Del Rio Chapter arrived for the awards Banquet held on Tuesday night, June 21, 1980. The awards presented are held every quarter and outstanding members are recognized for their activities performed in the quarter. The selections are made by the District Director and the local President. The Uvalde Jaycees were honored with the presence of the Jaycee State President, Jay Brim, A.J. Clinton, Regional Director, Region 1-c, and Sam Robinson, District Director. The speaker for the banquet was the State President who pointed out to the members that their district is “The Top District in The Sate” and before the year is over you will clamp down on that honor. The State President also pointed out that one of the biggest projects that the Jaycees will be undertaking will be all effort in getting more people registered to vote. Their thrust is to register high school seniors and advise them to exercise their right to vote. He pointed out that in the last election only a small percentage of the registered voters had gone to the polls to decide the type of SIMPLIFIED MUSIC — I predict a rebirth of the big band era will sweep the country in the coming months with smaller units and music performed by trios and quartets that will reach a new intimacy! Tunes will be simplified and the sound will be exceptional! String instruments will dominate the scene! NEW WORLD LEADERS - I predict new world leaders will be in the making before this time next year in Russia, Iran, Israel and the United States! MORE NUDE MOVIES —I predict the going trend in motion pictures will be more nudity! The classic films of old will be remade with many nude scenes! U.S. PRIDE —- I predict the 1980s will bring about a restoration of American pride and a deeper interest in Politics and increased patriotism! Americans will band together to create the strongest force to date! WIDENING WORLD CRISIS - I predict a widening world crisis in other trouble spots of the world besides Iran and Afghanistan will break out this year before the winter snows melt! Especially in countries that welcome American tourists and the almighty dollar! This will cause a series of new summit meetings and continued misunderstandings! Every foreign entanglement we subscribe to always costs American dollars! Travel agents have a novel way of extracting extra money from all American tourists! This reaches into simple purchases of merchandise! ARTIFICIAL PLANTS — I predict that artificial plants will be seen more and more in the homes in the coming weeks and months, leaving live plants outdoors where they belong! These artificial plants will give off the same pleasant aroma as real ones! GASOHOL FROM CORN - I predict corn will be the big denominator in the future manufacture of gasohol! This special lead-free gasohol with added ingredients will double the mileage! There are now nearly 700 hundred stations selling gasohol, and this total will spread to a full market! This will create a balance in our gasoline economy! Our present gasoline will last until it’s all used up by the end of next year! NEW HEADS OF COMPANIES - I predict there will be a startling number of changes in the heads of large corporations who will be forced into early retirement because they can no longer cut the mustard! They will be replaced by much younger men and women with more recent schooling and new ideas! CHILDREN’S WAY WITH ANIMALS - I predict it will be a scientific fact before the year is over that children have a natural way with animals which adults lack! If the children are let alone by the adults, the animals respond in amazing ways! Animals can be taught to do almost anything, within reason, when taught by children — to the astonishment of oldsters! © 1980, McNaught Syndicate, Inc. leadership for our community. Los economistas It used to be you could only reach the Phone Company by phone... However, more than a concert was planned for these eagler listeners. Guests of the orchestra were the Pickwick Puppet Theatre in their special production of the Tchaikivsky ballet “Sleeping Beauty. ’ ’ The Pickwick Puppet Theatre specializes in dramatizations of symphonic and ballet works with many of the nations leading sumphony orchestras. Many of the puppets used in these shows are over five feet tall. Director of the company is Ken Moses, one of the most famous puppeteers in the country. When not busy with his puppet theatre, Moses is kept busy creating, producing, and directing puppet shows for national television programs. A special part of the concert was at the end when Moses took • down the puppet stage curtain and explained how the puppets were operated. Little did students know there were three Sleeping Beauties! Even after seeing the puppeteers in action, the puppets still seemed real. Even grown-ups “oohed and ahhed’’ over their performances. Although the puppet theatre dominated the stage, students were aware of the orchestra in the pit below. After all, puppets cannot dance without music! Students looked for “their” instrument in the orchestra. Others saw instruments they had only seen before in pictures. The San Antonio Symphony has presented student concerts for thirty-four years. The theme of the student concert series for 1979-80 is “The San Antonio Symphony Salutes the International Year of the Child. ’ ’ The value of their efforts is best realized through these comments from Benson students’ reports. “I have always wondered what the word symphony meant. Since our music teacher told us we were to go see a symphony, I was very thrilled because it had always been a great wish of mine to see a symphony. ’ ’ “The music made the puppets seem more alive.’ “On the way to San Antonio we had to remember the names of the rivers, towns, and counties. ” “It was a long time before we got there, but it was worth it.” “I liked the orchestra best.” “I liked the trip because I got to see a lot of things I have never seen before.” “The puppets moved as if they were real people.’’ “I thought it was going to be boring but it wasn’t.” ‘ ‘The people behind stage worked very hard for what performance. ’ ’ ‘‘The witch (evil fairy) was very impressive.’’“I liked the way the lady played the harp.’’“We saw some amazing sights.” “I myself enjoyed the music the best.’’ “Peter Tchaikovsky wrote very beautiful music when he wrote Sleeping Beauty.* “It was very exciting seeing the puppets dance and hearing the orchestra play. ” “The percussionist Continued on Pg. 8 Now you can do it yourself and save even more on installation fees.
