About Yolanda’s Murder...
Just like a lot of you I too have wondered if the murder of Yolanda Garcia had been forgotten. Let us hope that the investigation will soon end and that those involved will come to trial.
In my first issue of El Uvalde Times on November 13, 1977, in my first column I quoted some lines from Frank Sinatras song “High Hopes’’. For those of you that missed it the lines I quoted went something like this:
One there was a silly ol ram, who thought she could punch a hole in a dam. No one could mahe that ram scram, She hept hittin that dam—
Oops there goes another million, billow at dam.
Cause she had high hopes, high hopes, high up above in the shy hopes!

Todavía Soy la Misma Terca....
En mi primer periódico que publique el 13 de Noviembre, 1977 en mi columna This I Have To Say, en ingles (esa no la traduje al español) recordé unas lineas de una canción de Frank Sinatra que se llama ”Altas Esperanzas. . La canción habla de una chivita terca que se le pone que puede quebrar la pader de cemento de una presa de esas enormes. Los versos terminan con que la chiva derrumba la presa de tanto dale y dale a la pader. Mas o menos asi me siento. Empezamos con un enorme sueno y cada dia lo vemos menos difícil. Aunque nos apenan algunos errores y falta de reportes, pero lo mejor es que seguimos con .Altas Esperanzas.
para mi misma, porque yo tengo dos ñiños hermosos y comprensivos que viven con mi esposo y yo todas las tribulaciones que nos trae el publicar este periódico. Hay muchos ñiños como los mios, que aceptan el que trabajen sus madres con paciencia y comprensión y hacen todo lo que esta de su parte para formar familias felices. A veces muchos de nosotros no les damos a nuestros hijos el crédito que se merecen. Les animo a todos que compartan conmigo el pensamiento que nuestros hijos merecen todo el carino y paciencia que les podamos dar. El 1980 ha sido designado como El Ano de la Familia y que hermoso es, porque las familias felices y unidas son la base para una buena sociedad.

The Year of the Family
CHANGE IN SEASONS — I predict a changing of the length of the seasons, whereby winter by far will take up the major proportion with an extended 10 months, plus the shortening of summer! Spring will be the shortest season of all! Fall will be a languid time! This will come about in the short time span of 16 years!
NEW SEX RULES — I predict a new set of sex rulings for our public schools, colleges and universities! This will curb the sexual freedom that has been prevalent the past 20 years! These new set of rules will keep the sexes more divided than ever!
MORE EARTHQUAKES - I predict before year’s end there will be a series of devastating earthquakes hitting Japan, the Philippines, India, China, Turkey, and last but not least, IRAN! South America below the equator will also have a series of earth shattering quakes as well as the coastline of California up into Alaska! The only safe spot this year will be western Europe! Yes, the promised earthquakes will cause havoc, billions of dollars in property loss, pain, panic, famine, pestilence, destruction and death!
Al empezar nuestro tercer ano con este periódico reconocemos que hemos cruzado muchos puentes pero lo mejor es que nuestro espíritu sigue siendo fuerte.

El 1979 fue El Ano Internacional del Niño. Esperemos que todos quedemos concientes de la responsabilidad de quere, protejer y guiar a nuestros ñiños en los próximos anos para que ellos lleguen a ser una saludable. Como una madre que trabaja, yo comprendo la dificultad en cumplir con todas nuestras diversas responsabilidades; pero el ser padres buenos y paciente debe seguir siendo igualmente importante que nuestras carreras profesionales. Estas palabras las publico aqui como recordatorio
Como muchos de ustedes, yo también me he preguntado que si el asesinato de Yolanda Garcia ya se les había olvidado a las autoridades. Esperemos que la investigación pronto se termine y que los responsables lleguen al jurado.

being good, patient parents must remian equally as important as our personal professional careers. These words I print here as a very personal reminder to myself, because I have two beatiful, understanding children who share the trials and tribulations of this newspaper in so many ways. There are many children like mine, who accept their working moms with patience and understanding and do all they can to form happy families. Sometimes a lot of us don’t give our children the proper credit they deserve. I encourage yuou to share with me the

My wife and I went to Lost Vagues for a week. Somebody gave us the trip, and my wife doesn’t believe in wasting anything. “Besides,’’ she said, “The Lord has commanded you to go into all the world and you haven’t been to Lost Vagues yet.” It was an experience!
Lost Vagues is a land of sand, silver dollars and light bulbs—in about equal proportions. After one day, I realized that we had one of six choices —eat, drink, go to shows, gamble, look, and pick sand out of our teeth. Mostly we ate and looked.

It was interesting to watch all those people, in an age of tight money, throwing their cash around like it was bottle caps. Men and women sat on stools at black jack tables while others sat hypnotized by the spinning roulette wheels. This wild show went on 24 hours a day, because once inside a casino, you couldn’t tell what time it was. The windows were tinted so you couldn’t tell whether it was day or night, and there were no clocks. Rest rooms were hidden so well that their use was discouraged, and the casinos themselves were arranged like these glass houses in a carnival —once in you couldn’t find your way out.

However, this moneyeating town was considerate of the handicapped. Some slot machines were made in the shape of crutches for easy pulling, and the floors made it easy for wheel chairs to roll. Free alcoholic beverages were served to all gamblers, to at least make them happy losers.
Prostitution is legal in Lost Vagues, and these “business’’ people advertise openly in the paper. I didn’t see»many police around, and I don’t suppose any are needed if everything is legal.
