12 de OCTUBRE ■ DIA DE LA RAZA
Se celebró por primera vez en Robe el Día de La Raza, 12 de Octubre, La fiesta, oatrocinada por Las Familias Unidas, fuá compuesta de la rica música cultural de Niro Martínez, Libertad, y los -hermanos Serrata. 21 Día de la Raza se celebra en México y todo Latino America, y ahora en Robe también, 3n las primeras decadas del siglo 16, la iglesia católica y
el gobierno español se vieron forzados a reconocer, oficialmente, que habla una raza nueva, gente que ni era español ni indio.
Desde entonces, ese día ha simbolizado el nacimiento de la Raza.
La celebración en la esquina de Ave. A y 1st fue todo un éxito, con más de personas presentes. Todo esto a pesar de que la ciudad rehusó dar permiso para tener
Jamaica. Ni quicleron conectar la luz. Gracias a Don Guadalupe Sa,las, hubo electrocidad para los músicos.
Esta fiesta fue parte del esfuerzo de Las Familias Unidas de recordarle al pueblo chicano de aquel orgullo en la gran herencia y tradición que el mundo gringo nos ha negado y ocultado por tantas generaciones.
SCHOOL NOTES shufflin' an' grinnin'
School officials are in a bind again. T.iey gave themselves fat raises and now they are in danger of losing tnem, again.
The biggies in the system are also concerned because the pet man for a fat federal salary did not get accepted. Now they have hired him anyway, with a new salary ar.d title. Rut how far is that going to go?
In addition, ti.ey iiavo a high school principal who they insist is only interim—ah, wonder Just what that means?—and he got, shoved down their throats. 3o they won't give him any help and the high school is bottlenecked at the office, right?
Then, there's the .-.atter of re-asslrnmcnts. RLpD lias taken on a philosophy over the decades ttiat people work best, (and do least) in their nic e. C-f course the biggies determine how well
each person fits in his or her particular niche. And they are somewhat indecisive.
.it iilSD the importance is on loyalty, loyalty to the hierarchy of it all. Originality and creativity is fine but loyalt;- is better. The first two will get teachers fired, the last will get you promotions, rewards, pats on the back and light assignments.
Strong and dynamic people are stifled or weeded out. Loyal people, regardless of their ta-lenti are kept, and kept, and kept. Total and absolute incom-petants clutter the system.
and over the years they "nave accumulated to the point that the schools are in shambles. There is virtually no organization l?ut there is one hell of a chain of command.
^ittle is the concern over what
students are getting from it all. There is lip service to it but little else. Certainly, some tea-c ers do the best, but they are not only outnumbered by the ones that don't, they are directed and supervised by them.
Morale of the students is only a result of it. And it is a natural outgrowth. Robstown schools should have something somewhere that relates to the real lives of the average Robstown student. If education doesn't relate to the students then they will become disinterested.
One teacher once said that what Robstown needed was a liquor store and a big fire. I think what Robstown really need»-is a liquor store and a big firing.
