The Cross and the Switchblade, Wilderson’s first book, is the account of Mr. Wilderson’s first efforts to reach and rehabilitate street gang members during the era of the gang wars of the late 1950’s and early 1960’s. The book, first published in 1962, is in its twenty-eighth printing, has been translated into 42 languages and has passed the 16 million mark in sales.
Wilkerson’s book details the formation of the organization called Teen Challenge which in the past decade has become one of the most successful in the world for the rehabilitation of drug addicts. Teen Challenge now has facilities in over 50 cities in the United States, and a documented cure rate of 74%.
One of Mr. Wilkerson’s first encounters with a teen gang member, as related in his book, was with Nicky Cruz,
