When Persia Khambetta, playing the hairless woman from the planet Delta in “Star Trek,’’ was asked about shaving her head for the film, she admitted it was a traumatic experience she would hesitate to repeat. Persis’ tresses are long, black and silky. As for the film, at the risk of being dissolved by Trekkies, I found the special effects interesting but the action boring. However, Star Trek fans have proven by the box-office take they're glad to see their old friends Shattner, Nimoy, et al, even 15 years older.

OVERCOMING THE ALCOHOL THREAT Dear Dr. Esse: Why don’t we do more to overcome the threat of alcohol? I keep reading of all these automobile accidents and deaths due to drunken drivers. The government is trying to crack down on drugs. Why not on alcoholics? — Mr. B.
Dear Mr. B.: Alcohol is certainly up there around the list of offenders. I think you will agree that nationally and state-wide, efforts are continually being made to make people aware of the dangers of drinking — especially before driving. Alcohol is involved in at least 50 percent of the 50,000 or more traffic deaths every year.
Essentially, the problem must be solved on a state and local level. Strict enforcement by police and courts is essential if we expect to make any headway against the alcohol threat.
But there’s much that is being done. In homes and in bars, for instance. I have a friend who has purchased an electronic breath analyzer, similar to that used by highway patrolmen. Whenever he gives a party, and much drinking has been going on, each guest must submit to a test before he leaves for home at the wheel of his car. Any guest who has a reading over 10 percent alcohol content is not allowed to leave — except by cab, or driven home by a sober guest.
I’ve been told that a few bars have hung signs — and also some liquor stores — to the effect that “too much liquor may be hazardous to health.”

Defensive Driving course offered

The National Safety Council’s Defensive Driving Course will be offered in Uvalde on Monday, January 7, and Wednesday, January 9, at the Junior High School cafeteria from 6:00 until 10:00 p.m. each day. Cost of the course is $12 and advance registration may be made by calling the Central School Office of the Uvalde CISD at 278-6655 during working hours.

Ask the workers at International Poultry, Inc., a cooperative processing firm in Connecticut. Out of work, they wanted to be independent and self-sufficient. But their goal seemed unreachable, until support from the Campaign for Human Development (CHD) helped them unite.
