Manana me voy.” También les This I Have To Say.... year was a cloudy statement. First of all- the ration* of Mexican-American teachers to anglo teachers, to date, is still very much out of proportion. Even if every new position this year had been filled by Mexican-American, the proportion would stjll be many more anglos to Mexican -Americans(something like 4 anglos to 1 Mexican When die student population is made up of over 60% Mexican-American children, it is only fair to ask that the employment of teachers be more equal. Our children are providing jobs for all those administrators and teachers, WE DESERVE a fair share of employment! John Loehr No Hizo Su Trabajo Mrs. Bailey lied again when she said the board hired teachers, not because they were anglo or Mexican, but because they were rne qualified. Mr. Torres hit a good point when he asked her if she believed that hiring a teacher to teach bilingual when she could not speak Spanish instead of hiring the ones that were bilingual was her idea of the best qualified. All that these teachers hired had to do, Torres said, was to attend a short course at Sul Ross Study Center here, and they got certified as bilingual teachers. Mrs. Bailey asked Mr. Tqrres tp ask Dr. Eddie ! Little about the way bilingual teachers were hired since it was an administranve manei. Dr. Little was there in the room at the time, but Mrs. Bailey did not attempt to have him answer Mr. Torres’s questions. Even if he had, it would have been the same three ring circus I went through when I asked the same questions. Little would say to talk to Alice Martinez, the Director of the Bilingual Program who makes the recomendations for hiring (supposedly), and Mrs. Martinez will say that she has no authority to hire anyone, that Mr. Byrom does all the hiring. So Mr. Torres was not given an/ answers on this either. this that the El Primer Mandamiento del Distrito Escolar: “Los Padres No Hablaran En Las Juntas De La Directiva.” El reporte de el lugar adicional para votar fue puesto como otro asunto separado en la genda (en • el numero 3) El Sr. Torres dijo que queria i Continua en pagina 8 Mrs. Bailey lied again when she said Elizabeth Knippa, the Director of Follow Through Program was hired for the post because she was chosen by the Follow Through Parents Advisory Committee, who were all Mexican-American. The PAC in Uvalde is and has alwyas been a farce for parent involvement. The guidelines of the Headstart and Follow Through Programs say that parents can recommen d the personnel to be hired for the programs but I have yet to know of an instance where the parents have been asked to submit names of teachers and administrators they would like to see hired. So, NO, Mrs. Bailey, the parents did not ask you all to hire Miss Knippa for the job. NO, they weren’t asked to give the names of others they would like to have as their director, so don’t use them as a cover up. John Loehr Didmt Do His Job ARE YOU A Come By And Shop Our óllüp UUI At Deluxe Pharmacy Open 9:00 To 7:00 for Your Convenience When Mrs. Bailey appointed a Committee to look into the possibility of another voting place, we all thought, "Well, at least its a start.” But hearing John Loehr’s excuses for not' having anything to report made me realize the committee was another farce. He said there were “a lot of questions’* that needed answers; that it would cost a lot of money, that they needed more time. After three months, they need more time? When I asked Mr. Loehr (later, during the break, of course) to explain what problem’s he had encountered, he could not give me an answer, he walked away to the coffee room. THIS IS WHAT THE JUSTICE DEPARTMENT IS TALKING ABOUT when they say our school board is insensitive to the needs of Mexican-Americans. I have , seen John Loehr work on other committees and come up with definite answers and possible solutions.... why no interest in this important request? And why were all the other board members mum when Mr. Torres was talking to them? Continue on page 8 278-4290 436 W. Oak 133 N. High 278-2522 Lumbermart La Fama Bakery San Antonio Hwy 278-9008 118 S. High zr.::; - •Mix- What Is Charity? What is charity? Some say it is a synonym for love, but charity Charity is everlasting love, perfect love, a love for everyone, the pure love of Christ which endures forever. It is love so centered in righteousness that he who possesses charity has no aim or desire except for the eternal welfare of his own soul and the souls around him. is more than love. In Corinthians (13:1-2) the apostle Paul said: “Though I speak with tongues of men and of angels and have not charity, I have become a sounding brass, or a thinking cymbal. And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge; and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not charity, I am nothing. As we attempt to emulate the example given by our Saviour, we must realize that charity is not something we can hastily acquire. The Saviour spent thirty years preparing himself for his mission. While every kindness we bestow is a step in the right direction, an occasional act of charity on our part will not make us a charitable person and merit us a place in our Father's Kingdom. It requires a lifetime effort. A young girl once said to her mother, after a lovely white-haired visitor had left their home. “If I could be as lovable, and sweet as that woman. I wouldn't mind growing old. “The deceiving mother replied: “If you want "o be that kind of person in your old age you had best begin now. She does not impress me as being a piece of work that was done in a hurry.” Neither is acquiring the virtue of charity a piece of work that can be done in a hurry. Our ability to be charitable does not depend upon our material resources. It does not matter how much we have to give. The Lord is concerned with our willingness to give. Recall the experience of our Saviour as he stood and watched people casting money into the treasury. There were many that were rich and cast in large sums. Then there came a certain poor widow who threw in two mites. A mite was the seventh part of one piece of their brass money. The Saviour called his diciples to him and said to them: Verily I say unto you, that this poor widow hath cast in more, then all they which have cast into the treasury. For all they did cast in of their abundance; but she of her want did cast in all that she had, even all her living.” (Mathew 12:33-34) How do we become charitable? How do we learn to truly love one another? Merely not by mere words alone but through his actions. He served them. And this too is the way we can learn to have charity-by serving one another.
