Foreign Investment In U.S. Farmland Part II By Barry Jones UVALDE—Greedy Moslems in strange garb are not buying up huge tracts of Southwest Texas farm and ranch land! That is, if you believe a recently released survey on foreign land purchases conducted nationally by the U.S. Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry. In fact, it is the Western Europeans (primarily West Germans) who are making the limited farm and ranch land purchases in the state. At the current rate of investment, the study indicates that it will take these foreign firms or individuals 25 years to claim owner ship to one percent of the available Texas crop and ranch lands. Information on purchases of Texas farm land by foreign investors is limited to a January, 1977 to June 1978, survey conducted by the Texas Agricultural Extension Service for the U.S. Senate Agriculture Committee. The survey conducted during that period showed that more than 93,000 acres in 26 Texas counties had been sold to 42 foreign investors. “This figure is 0.07 percent of our total Texas farmland (141.4 million acres),” said Dr. Richard Floyd, a Texas A&M University economist for real estate. “If 2.5 percent of the land in Texas changes hands every year, this means that during this period, foreign investors were involved in two percent of the acreage transferred in Texas.’” “At this rate of foreign investment, it would take 25 years for one percent of our farmland to fall into foreign ownership.” The real estate economist said land transactions with foreign investors ranged in size from 100 acres to 17,000 acres. ,Of the 26 counties covered, most transactions were concentrated in Northeast and East Central Texas. In Southwest Texas, one transaction for 2,100 acres was in Bandera County; three transactions for 4,950 acres were in Comal County and one transaction for 5,000 acres was in Zavala County. “The largest single group of foreign investors in Texas farmland was from West Germany,” Dr. Floyd said. “Historically, there also has been foreign investment from Central and South America.” “There simply was little or no indication that oil dollars from Middle Eastern countries were involved in these farmland purchases in Texas.” El dueño de un circo buscaba con ansiedad un enano que pudiese acompañar a los payasos en sus exhibiciones para t-raer la attencion.
