10 EL UVALDE TIMES JUNE 8, 1991 Summertime fun activities!! By Jane M. Chavez School is already finished and it is time to plan summer activities for your children and family. These can be day trips, afternoon excursions or a week’s vacation to explore new learning experiences. One idea might be to study wildflowers that are abundant in our area. A picnic or swim at the river might include identifying some wildflowers, learning their common names, and the various parts of the flower. Use the library as a source of information and write to the Texas Department of Highways, Box 5064, Austin, Texas 78763-5064 for a free copy of the folder “Wildflowers of Texas.” They also have an excellent state highway map. How about bird watching? You can do this in your own backyard, Notice Who Is Advertising in El Uvalde Times Give them your business. You may want to make a bird feeder for your yard to attract more birds. Again you may need a book to help you to identify the birds. One good source is the book “A Field Guide to the Birds of Texas” by Roger Tory Peterson, available at the library, or you may want to purchase it as a birthday or summer activity gift for your child to keep them interested in birds and their habits. There are several other good books on birds. Remember nature walks or hikes in our local parks, Garner Park or Lost Maples, as well as Big Bend National Park are a grand opportunity to study wildflowers and birds as well as learn more about trees, rocks, and geological formation. What you are really trying to do is to teach your child to ASK QUESTIONS, to SHARPEN THEIR OBSERVATION SKILLS and READ and RESEARCH to learn more about their surroundings. If you would like a booklet of all the parks, lakes, and places of interest, write for your free copy of TEXAS STATE TRAVEL GUIDE to the State Department of Highways, the same address as listed above. When you go to San Antonio for shopping trips, doctor appointments or to visit relatives, why not include a trip to the San Antonio Botanical Gardens (open Tuesday through Sunday), the Witte Museum (exhibits now include South Texas birds, Rock Art of acient Texans and a new exhibit of dinosaurs), the San Antonio Zoo, San Antonio Missions or Seaworld. Along with going to see the wildlife and plants, have your children study and read about what they are going to see, for example, if you are going to the San Antonio Missions, they should study the history of Texas and Mdkico to see how the missions were used in those days, what people wore, and how they traveled. The monthly Texas Highways magazine, available at the library, has had a number of articles recently on the San Antonio Missions. Have your children help to plan the trip using the map to plan the route. How many miles? How much gas? Calculate the number of miles per gallon of gas. How much does it cost to buy lunch? If groceries are purchased, how much does it cost for a picnic lunch? How much does the whole trip cost per person? This is how you can teach your children how to MAKE DECISIONS, and HOW TO SOLVE PROBLEMS. And don’t forget, to include the exhibit: “MEXICO: SPLEDORS OF THIRTY CENTURIES.” It is a great opportuniy to see jade, gold, and ceramic articles that the Indian civilization made in Mexico 3000 years ago. The museum is open daily 10 to 6. The Splendors of Mexico exhibit will display through August 4, 1991. Don’t miss this excellent history lesson on Mexico. And if you want to learn more history about Texas, visit the Institute of Texas Cultures located at HemisFair Plaza. It tells the story of Texas and its people illustrating the contribution of more than 30 ethnic groups to the state. Live presentations, films/slides in the dome, and a History/mystery game are available 9 to 5 everyday (except Monday) during the summer. Admission is free! So enjoy your summer with your children and family!
