Bobby Madrid also set a new Mexican record in the 5,000 Meters at .15m. 34.2s. after winning the 800 Meters. The third Mexican National Record was set by William Morales of San Diego State who heaved the javalin 193 feet 4% inches. Phil Diez of U.C.L.A, was high point man of the meet with three firsts in the 1 00 Meters, 1 10 Meters Hurdles, and 200 Meters Hurdles, and a third in the high jump; and Elias Castañeda of S.C.A.A. was a close second. He won the shot and discus and placed third in the 1 10 Meters hurdles and fourth in the Javalin. Ventura Flores, the little Indian from Tepozotlan chalked up the only victory for Mexico in the distance events by winning the 10,000 Meter Run in the excellent time of 33 minutes 30.5 seconds. He and his running mate also from Mexico, Manuel Martinez, lapped the whole field at least once. This race is an open race, and everyone can compete, whether he is a Mexican or not. Special trophies are given to the first three non-Mexicans to finish. James Wells, Edwin Errett, and Jack Powell won the trophies. Coronel Ignacio Beteta, Chief of the Physical Education Department for the Republic of Mexico, was present at the meet. He was very well pleased at the marks and stated that Art and Gabe Cazares, Bobby Madrid, Phil Diez, Elias Castañeda, and William Morales would be given a chance to represent Mexico in the Pan-American Olimpic Games to be held at Barranquilla, Colombia, in 1942.
