El Uvalde Times \ 25c'; EL UNICO PERIODICO BILINGÜE EN EL WINTERGARDEN THE ONLY BILINGUAL NEWSPAPER IN THE WINTERG ARDEN AREA Vol. Ill, No. 64 621 W. Main St. Uvalde, Texas 78801 May 3, 1979 This I Have To Say Olga M. Rodriquez Good Concern But Action Is What Is Needed...” Uvalde School Board members pondered over the dilema of having much more repairs needed in our schools than the $40,000 it had allowed in the budget for this year for that item. They did a wonderful job of listing the repairs needed and had a difficult time deciding which repairs could hold up till next year and which could be done this summer. They all agreed more money was needed and began thinking that a bond issue was the only way out of the building shortage problem. School District Short of Money For Repairs I wondered at the prudence of these men who last month approved the salaries of a tennis coach and a gold coach. I also remembered the pay raises given to our coaches not too long ago. There was very little argument presented as those expenditures were approved. I also think of all the money that could be acquired if the district would go ahead and reevaluate properties now. Blaming the delay on pending legislation has already cost the school the money it could have saved by having the re-evaluation done jointly with the city. The city has gone ahead on their own and the job is nearly completed. Die high drop out rate of our students before they even reach high school is a problem that the board has not once shown any concern for since I have been covering these meetings. It is very sad to think of all those individuals that have been lost from the educational standpoint, most probably due to poor curriculum and insensitive administrators, but that is not the only aspect that the board should consider on the drop out problem. There is a lot of money lost by our district each time a student drops out. Maybe this reason is important enough for the board to care about it. ... >- ■ The Public Should Care.... J Which is more important— the covered sidewalks for the elementary school children at Batesville or the dangerous wiring at the Jr. High School? What about the bad shape of the parking lots at Anthon and Robb? The boys bathrooms at Robb are in sad shape, too. These are some of the questions the Uvalde School Board pondered at last Tuesday night’s meeting. The board had allowed $40,000 for summer repairs but each committee formed to field check the schools had returned with a long lists of requests from the principals, teachers, their own personal observation and that of Maintenance Supervisor Dave Bingham and Assistant Superintendent Paul Curtis. It was soon evident that it would be im- possible to comply with even some of the most pressing needs the school has. Trustee Dan Davis made the comment that it looked as if the only way out was to think about a bond Cont. on page 5 A Visto Esta Troca?
