The SWTJC students are members of the technical writing group associated with a research project funded by an American Chemical Society grant. They are studying the use of insect mating pheramones for control of insect .reproduction. They travelled to A&M For a day and a half of ^iard research in the Sterling C. Evans Library on the A&M campus. In addition to much pheramone research, they also learned something about A&M and Aggies. Because all SWTJC students were housed in the “Quad” dorm area where the Corps lives, they learned such essential items as the fact that Aggie Corps members have an early reveille and formation, that they do many pushups each day, and they run a lot. Each SWTJC student had a host roomate from A&M. After finishing their research, several of the students were escorted in a tour around Bryan-College Station by some of their newly found Aggie friends. Accompanying the research group were Dr. and Mrs. Joseph M. Kirkland, Mr. Ed Heath, and Mrs. Sharon Dent. Dr. Kirkland, the technical writing instructor, is supervising this aspect of the research project. Mr. Heath, the chemistry instructor, is coordinator for the project. Students making the trip were Terry Bein, Carolyn Pape, Phil Gorman, Patrick Seals, Anthony Morin, Edwin Garner, Robert Elledge, James Haynes, Roland Cardenas, David Mata and Leroy Hernandez. -3 í -1 ■ fí HARD WORK WITH THE BOOKS-- Leroy Hernandez studies periodicals on insect pheramones on a recent trip to the Texas A&M Library. Tal vez yo debería estar escribiendo a un experto de finanzas, pero estoy tan cansada y me siento meteorology from the University of Utah in addition to specialty courses such as satellites, tropical meteorology and modern weather techniques. He is a physical fitness enthusiast and maintains a private pilot’s license, likes sports cars, boats and contact sports. Ashmore is a professional member of the American Meteorological Society and possesses the AMS seal of approval for radio and television broadcasts. Rich.... from pg. 1 tation for the elderly. Advertise With Us El Uvalde Times 278-3616 Local second-graders are promised maximum fun and learning when their teachers introduce them to “Big Ideas in Nutrition Education: Blanced Meals.” The special two-week unit helps youngsters make better food choices, both in the school cafeteria and at home. The program is based on the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s food grouping system, an easy-to-understand guide for selecting a balanced diet. The major food groups include milk, meat, vegetable-fruit and breadcereal. Ms. Fran Johnson, nutrition consultant for Dairy Council, Inc., San Antonion, conducted the teacher workshop for the Anthon Elmentary school for second grade teacher; Diane Curtis. The second-grade students will be able to classify foods into the food groups, and select a balanced meal, after completing the unit. "Students take what they’ve learned at school home with them. Parents who help their second-graders make wise food choices at home often find themselves learning about nutrition, because ‘Balanced Meals’ is based on what Dairy Council nutritionists call ‘survival skill,”’ Ms. Fran Johnson said. “These nutrition ‘Survival skills’ can be compared to driving a car,” she added. “You don’t have to know how an internal combustion engine works to operate it safely, but you do have to know how to start the engine and fill the tank with gas.” Dairy Council, Inc. is a nonprofit nutrition education organization serving 21 million people in a seven-state region, headquartered in San Antonio, Texas. the organization is funded by local diary farmers. In addition, this year DCI has received a grant from the Texas Education Agency to supplement DCI’s programs, and to increase the number of teachers and students reached within the state.
