EL UVALDE TIMES Page 3 JANUARY 17,1980 friends, and Mr. Ben for many INSIDE TV - Add one more name to “The Dukes of Hazzard” fatality list. In a move that has been kept very quiet, actor-turned-director-turned actor James Best has walked off the CBS-TV series. Best, who played Sheriff Coltrane in the top-20 show, says his decision to quit was based on “personal reasons” having to do with the pressures of making a weekly series. Best has been replaced — although it may be on a temporary basis — by Richard Sargent, best known for playing Elizabeth Montgomery’s spouse on “Bewitched.” This development on top of the recent breakup of Cathy Bach’s three-year marriage makes Hazzard week ratings which were 20 percent lower than last year’s figures. And the combined ratings for all three networks were down nearly 10 percent from 1978’s premiere week. Although NBC had a freak number one week over ABC, on the strength of its movies “Coming Home’’ and “The Outlaw Josey Wales,” these films do not begin to account for the dropoff. The blame must rest squarely on the shoulders of the people who write, produce and broadcast the programs. The poor quality of much of what is being shown is literally driving potential viewers away from their sets. TV CLOSE-UP - Henry Winkler, the ABC-TV Country look like a pretty tough place to work ... Lee Majors, “The Six Million Dollar Man,’’ warns: “If you help a friend when he’s in trouble, he’ll never forget you — especially when he's in trouble again.” ... Debbie Reynolds wants to host her own talk show and thinks she can come up with an endless list of celebrities. Her agents are trying to put together the show for her. TV TICKER - It shouldn’t come as a big surprise, but the early indications are that TV viewers are not finding the new season terribly exciting. A leading industry trade paper notes that the number one network, ABC, had premiere “Happy Days” star, has just inked a two-picture deal with Casablanca. First to go before the cameras is “Pursuit” with Winkler portraying airline hijacker D.B. Cooper ... The former “Starsky & Hutch” star, David Soul, did so well with his recent two-part movie, “Salem’s Lot,” that he's now been signed to develop his own projects for both TV and the movies ... Bob Hope’s $3 million Palm Springs “dream home” is becoming a nightmare for neighbors and a headache for construction workers. Bob’s neighbors complain the house, perched on a mountain top, spoils the view. And his wife, Dolores, is driving contractors up the wall with endless changes ... Sir Laurence Olivier has been cast as Lord Marshmain in “Brideshead Revisited,” a TV adaptation of the Evelyn Waugh novel about the role of Catholicism in an eccentric English family. Letters all Uvalde compadres, neighbors of Sanchez, who years lived in Uvalde and was a truck driver for Jax beer many years ago. I am asking as he is a very close friend of ours, him and his wife Lile, and their four daughters, to please write him a card or a letter. Last month he had to have his left leg cut off he had to stop working, and now is feeling very depressed. Please write him, he still remembers lots of people in Uvalde. It’s just that sometimes people move from their hometowns and friends don’t know where they move too. Any cards or letters will mean alot to him. He reads your newspaper and some people in his town also get the paper and they give it to him. Please Olga do the best to explain this letter. Please repeat it in Spanish and we want to send our Congratulations to our brother-in-law Neftale and his wife Olga Rodriguez for their new arrival of their new daughter Kriselda on New Year’s Day. Only she could not be the New Years baby because she was born at home. But to us she is the first born of Uvalde for 1980. May God bless each and everyone there in Uvalde from us here in Ohio. Here is Mr. Ben Sanchez address. I hope that he gets lots of mail, and thank you so much. I’ll be looking for the newspaper every week. (Editors Note: Thank You for your letter Irene. I hope a lot of Mr. Sanchez’ friends will respond to your request and that he will soon regain his health and spirits. Sometimes the Lord gives us difficult trials, but upon surviving them we come out much stronger in spirit. Your letter encourages us to continue with our newspaper so that our people can have a means of communication which is so important to our progress. Don’t you think that the newspaper is like a mirror in which we see ourselves today and others will see us in the future? How many beautiful events happened in the past, that with the passing of our elderly citizens are forgotten and lost?-Olga) offthewmU- © 1979, McNaught Synd. íV i’ i1 'ipji rj. iÍi m i li । o !'>T. j'i • answer to Puzzle of Jan. 10, 1980 ^ST DEALS YET O1^ 1970 Chev. At the Uvalde Commissioners meeting last Tuesday morning, the landowners and their lawyer agreedto meet with the Uvalde County Attorney and Phil Hughes, the attorney for Sutton Properties and the developer of Uvalde Estates, in order to finalize an agreement that will insure the paving of some 9 miles of the principal roads and the required improvements to other side roads at the subdivision. There was a question over a clause in the proposal presented by Mr. Sutton’s attorney which attempted to indemnify Sutton from any future lawsuits by the landowners, once the roads are accepted by the County. The Commissioners agreed to the proposal if the county was not held liable for Sutton’s responsibilities developer. Other matters before the Commissioners were: ♦Authorized payment for the fire truck purchased from the Texas Forestry Service. ♦Approved travel expenses for Commissioner Torres relative to a Self Help Program to assist needy citizens with rehabilitating their homes. ♦Agreed to pay $200 per site as the tion of a agreement Watershed county’s por-Maintenance on the Leona Project. The same amount will be paid by the City of Uvalde and the Edwards Underground Water District.
