ESPAÑOL Kelley Suit Delayed Demanda Contra Kelley Detenida We enjoy being bicultural! The flag raising ceremony held at the West End Park last Thursday night was simple but sim-bolic. By destiny, we Mexican-Americans embrace two cultures, and patiently, lovingly and somewhat misteriously, blend them in our everyday lives. We enjoy being bicultural. We have adapted ourselves to eating tacos and hamburgers, toast and tortillas; to dancing polkas, cumbias and disco and rock; we sing western songs and Mexican songs. We don’t try to separate ourselves, really, we simply enjoy our two inherited cultures. Watch our little children- the magic with which they develop happily in both cultures. And our youth strolling about at the park each night. The adults working in the booths. The elderly sitting around enjoying the fiesta. Everyone is working and enjoying being together. For those of us who help organize the fiesta— Carmen Garza, Santos Flores, Pablo Luna, Hector Garcia, and El Uvalde Times staff— our greatest satisfaction is seeing our people happy and united, and also being able to work with so many people, Anglo and Mexican alike, who gave us so much help. Thanks and thanks, everyone! ?omethingNew! De acuerdo con el Sr. Bob Price de la Oficina del Soil Conservation ouien estuvo presente ConFd on Pg. 8 *• The citizens of Uvalde that attended last Monday’s Commissioners Court meeting were in for some strong accusations and honest to goodness revelations about our county officials. Judge Leo Darley made it a point to enlight the people three of the strongest issues of the the day. The people present there hoping to hear some good news on the Leona Watershed Project or at least the cleaning of the Leona River bed were rapidly disappointed, Commissioners Foley and Gene Use voted down and killed Judge Darley’s motion that the county clean the Leona River bed as an immediate alleviation to the danger of flooding. With the absence of Commissioner Faye Dismukes , Judgq Darley ENGLISH only had Commissioner Torres’ vote and that was not enough. The discussion over the proposed proyect for the building of dams created only frustration and division and left no positive conclusions. Foley and Use do not beleive in spending money on the cleaning project , preferring that the overwall proposed dam project be pursued. Judge Darley insisted that Commissioner Foley disqualify himself from voting or making motions on the issue because he owned land that would benefit from the proposed project. Judge Darley again gave a history of the developments that have stalled the project. The Soil Conservation Office asked the county to secure easements on the property : where the proposed dams are to be built. The county secured two of these easements after which the county found out that the federal money that was to finance these dams had never really been appropriated. For this reason Judge Darley feels it would be a waste of the taxpayers money to purchase these easement land when the federal money for the project may be a long time coming, /according to Bob Price, head of the Soil Conservation Office, even if the County were to secure the first four: easements in the next 30 days, the law would not permit his office to begin the: dams.
