A Great Difference. . .
The high price of food, and everything else, the fuel shortage, the resulting high price of gas and diesel— which in turn has caused the truckers to resort to striking—its enough to make one just sit and cry! Remember that song, “Hey, Stop the World and Let Me Off..”
We just can't give up and get off. Watergate shook everyone up because we found out that even the President cheated. What’s to keep us now from believing oil companies and other related industries, like the big oil shipping industry- cheat too? What we need now is more consumer watchdogs like Ralph Nader!
Some Festival.
With the huge success of the Cactus Jack World Championship Festival, the first and most important goal was accomplished-more community wide participation. Individuals, clubs and neighboring communities had a wonderful opportunity to work and have a lot of fun together. Many cheers to you all at the Uvalde Chamber of Commerce for a well organized event.
Did You See Us?
I hope you didn’t miss us at the parade! Being chosen as the No. 1 Entry in the Commercial Division of Cactus Jack Parade really boosted our ego. I cannot write another line without thanking my loyal and hardworking staff and friends who worked long hours to “give the boss her giant typewriter”. Roland Cardenas and Richard Flores who are 1979 UHS graduates did all the art work, with their families becoming very involved too. Leonor (None) Hernandez, Rosa Miranda and Janie Zamarripa not only spent extra time on the float but also organized and directed the Jalapeno Eating Contest and the Bean Throw which Fl Uvalde Times also sponsored. It was a very busy week for us, but a very rewarding experience too.

Los precios tan altos de la comida, y de todo lo demas, la escasez de combustible, que resulta en el altísimo precio que ahora vemos en el gas y el disel— lo que ahora esta causando las huelgas por los troqueros— todo esto es para hacer que uno se siente y se ponga a llorar! No recuerdan ustedes una canción en ingles que dice, “Paren el mundo que me quiero bajar....”
Pero no podemos darnos por vencidos. El asunto de Watergate nos sacudió' a todos porque nos dimos cuenta que hasta el Presidente del pais hace chapuza. Que nos puede impedir ahora en creer que las compafíias de aceite y otras industrias relacionadas, como las enormes compañias de transportan el aceite de países del extranjero- también están haciendo chapuza? Lo que necesitamos ahora es mas guardianes del consumidor como lot ha sido siempre Ralph Nader!
Que Buen Festival....
Con un gran triunfo del Festival Cactus Jack en Uvalde, se cumplió la primera y mas importante meta — de animar la participación de TODA la comunidad. Individuos, clubs, y ciudades vecinas tuvieron la oportunidad de trabajar y divertirse juntos. Muchos alagos se merecen los directores de la Camara de Comerico de Uvalde por tan gran evento.
Nos Vieron En El Paseo?
Ojala' que nos hayan visto en el paseo del Cactus Jack. Al recibir el Primer Lugar en la Division Comercial deveras que nos lleno de orgullo. No puedo escribir mas sin darle las gracias a mi fiel y trabajador personal, porque trabajaron muchas largas horas para darle a la * jefa una gigartc maquina de escribir.. Roland Cardenas y Richard Flores, quienes graduaron de high school este ano, hicieron todo el trabajo artístico y sus, familias Ies ayudaron también. Leonor (None), Rosa Miranda y Janie Zamarripa no solamente trabajaron en el float’ sino que también organizaron y diri-jieron los concursos de Comer Jalapenos y el Tiro de Frijoles que también patrocino El Uvalde Times. Fue una semana muy ocupada para nosotros, pero de mucha saitsfaccion también.

Dear Editor,
(Please print this letter we sent to the Uvalde Leader News in your newspaper to assist us in clearing a mistake in a quotation of LULAC State Director Ruben Bonilla.)
Enclosed are copies of two articles concerning Mr. Ruben Bonilla, National President of the League of Latin American Citizens. The paragraph we are interested in was written on page 3A, The San Antonio News, Monday, June 18, 1979: “Bonilla, the ougoing state director for the Texas LULAC, said the Hispanic organization “is not just fraternal anymore. After 50 years, we’re still Mexicans first, .then Americans.”

Leader News, Thursday, June 21, 1979, in not including the above underlined word “still” changed Mr. Bonilla's statement altogether.
In listening to the speech Mr. Bonilla made immediately after he was elected as president of the organization, one can see how the spoken word can differ from the written word if the whole context of what is said is not written.
According to Mr. Bonilla in spite of the fact that LULAC has been around for fifty years, some people still consider the Mexican-American as Mexican first, then American. In other words, he will work to see that Americans of Mexican descent get into the mainstream of American society and make sure that they are not considered aliens or hyphenated Americans but just plain Americans. De Instrucción de Hispanos
Hay nueva evidencia de ventajas en el nivel de instrucción alcanzado por adultos jovenes de origen hispano en los Estados Unidos, según publica el Censo del Departamento de Comercio.
En su informe anual sobre el nivel socio-ecnomico de americanos de origen hispano se indica que fía población que tenia
de 25 a 29 anos de edad en Marzo de 5 por ciento habían completado menos de 5 arios de instrucción escolar comparado con el 5^ por ciento de la población de origen hispano, de 65 anos o mas de edad.
El informe séllala que a pesar del mejoramiento en el nivel de instrucción de las personas jovenes de
origen Hispano, casi una quinta parte de todas las personas hispanas de 25 anos o mas de edad habían completado de 5 anos de instrucción escolar.
El informe, basado en una encuesta nacional tomado en Marzo de 1976, también indica que el ingreso de la familia esta relacio-

members. There was a suggestion made by Mrs. Bea Carmchall that the board of directors be re-organi-zed and that it include Mexican American as well.
The group was asked to sign up if they wished to work in the organization of the new group and in the various recreational activities that could be organized in the future.
