I’ll be there attending the 10th Annual Convention of the National Campaign for Human Development and will very possibly be under the same roof as Pope John Paul II. As I write this it is Monday, and the reality of this dream has not quite sunk in. I am going about the preparations for my trip in a ntumb sort of way. It is too exciting a happening for me to accept as a reality....! pray that my presence there will be of some benefit for this community and the people I will be speaking for. Have you ever thought that some things happen in a mysterious pre-arranged way? In these last two years so many things have fallen into place so precisely that I know my God is always with me. Despite the many tribulations we have had to face-the many good things that happen to us make everything turn out OK. I must document this faith of mine so that the next time I end up arguing or confronting a strong issue I can remember that everything has a good reason for happening. The lesson to remember is that FAITH in God and in our own selves is all the strength we need. The Retailers Are Wise To Organize.... I am very happy to see and be a member of the Greater Uvalde Retailers. It is about time our retailers really got together and planned ways to keep Uvalde’s money here, circulating in every local business in town. We all need each other...service station attendants buy clothes, groceries, jewelry, cars, etc., grocery people buy gas and everything else; cars, houses, and so on. It makes sense, more than ever to keep our money here. Every business in town would benefit by the sales promotions of retailers and should support the organization as members and consumers of local products. The organization needs strong, dedicated leaders and it needs loyal and dedicated members. More Mexican-American businesses must participate in the Chamber of Commerce and the Greater Uvalde Retailers. My representatives Leonor Hernandez, Rosa Miranda and Janie Samarripa and I will gladly come by and discuss either organization with you and why you as a business should join. We are all in this world together - lets work together! Have a nice day! Halloween Carnival serve basis. Those desiring to participate in the 1979 carnival must fill out the necessary application blank and pay the $10 booth fee. Commerce San Antonio, Texas 512-434-7201 MEMBER ISL1C AUS Government Agency 400 NORTH GETTY STREET, CPI proposes rate increase Central Power & Light announced today that it is filing rate applications with the 115 incorporated municipalities in which it serves and with the Public Utilities Commission. The applications propose higher rates to offset a base revenue deficiency of $94.9 million. However, operation of the company’s new Coleto Creek coal fired generation plant and resulting decreases in fuel and purchased power costs, amounting to $10.1 million based on the test year, should limit the overall increase to $84.7 million on an annual basis. The company’s present total revenues from all customers are approximately $500 million annually. In announcing the increase, CP&L Executive Vice President Bob Range explained that the proposed increase in rates would provide the company with a return of 10.75% on its invested capital. He noted that the amount of the increase would vary among the customer classes such as residential, commercial, industrial and municipal. According to Range, a residential bill that is now $100 would rise to about $115 under the proposed rates, depending on whether the customer lived inside or outiside incorporated city limits. He noted that some municipalities may option to increase the gross receipts payments the company makes to them from 2 % to 4 % If this should occur, under the proposed rates, the increase would be passed on to customers in those municipalities. The company had stated earlier this month that the increase in l Derating costs over the three years since the last change and a $500 million investment for new plants and facilities would prompt a rate change request. TCIP assists local citizens Because of the Texas Community Improvement Program (TCIP), rural residents don’t have to accept poorer community facilities and services than their urban counterparts. The Texas Agricultural Extension Service in cooperating with investor-owned electric utility companies is conducting the TCIP to help rural communities of under 1,000 population to deal with their problems, says Tim L. Shaunty. Shaunty is an Extension specialist in community resource development, / Texas A&M . University System. According to Shaunty, the TCIP assists local citizens without the usual “red tape’’. Although the program has no available funds, free help is available to those who seek it. Shaunty says many rural residents have received facilities and services through TCIP. If your community could be improved and you are willing to work, contact your local county Extension agent for more information, suggests the community resource development specialist. Shaunty adds that the TCIP sponsors an annual awards program to recognise those rural communities that have made significant progress in overcoming economic and social problems.
