Page 2 EL UVALDE TIMES March 13,1980 Esto Lo Tengo Que Decir! This I Have To Say! Vamos a unimos. You all listened! I am so glad to know that my words are not falling on deaf or disinterested ears! The response to last week’s editorial on the school board was the most enthusiastic I had ever had. What is most significant was that there were 26 calls on the school board, 15 were from Mexican-American parenta and teachers and 11 were from anglo parents and teachers. Thank you all for letting me know you agre with me or have some advice on how to approach the problems with the school system. Yes, I was a little strong last week. I could use more diplomacy, but when you try talking, pleading, begging, for some response from the school board and those men act so irresponsible, time and time again...its very hard to keep my cool. Yes, we will probably gain more by being more positive. Thank your for having faith in our democratic system despite all its shortcomings. What I am urging you all is to come forth with all your complaints and let’s document them in the school board minutes, so that when HEW, the Texas Education Agency and the judge that could fhear our law suit, want documented evidence, it will be there. We have done enough complaining among ourselves. The fear of retaliation by the school board has to be the most mysterious one I have ever encountered. How can so many superbly educated and intelligent individuals fall at the mercy of individuals who do not have half as much education or personal qualities. Just from the complaints I heard this week I am beginning to see the immensity of the problems we need to correct. Our educational system here, folks, is one big farce. We look very good on paper but in reality our children are not receiving the education they deserve. We have excellent teachers, people that are teaching because they love to create educated, productive individuals for a good society, but these teachers are becoming immensely frustrated by how they are supervised by incompetent administrators and supervisors. My children have been fortunate to have had, up to now, beautiful, dedicated teachers. But what about those that do not earn their paycheck? Those that use “strings’* to go up the ladder, those that are not qualified to teach, much less supervise? What about those teachers and administrators that have voiced their concern, and offered their suggestions for a more productive way of teaching? The tactics of “cold-shouldering’’ individuals or denying them information, participation and even excluding them from pay increases, to discourage them to stay here is so common. As one individual put it, ‘ The place really stinks. ’ ’ This comment, my dear readers, shows the level of morale in our educators. But whose fault is it? Ours, and only ours. As parents we must come forward and organize ourselves and present constructive criticism to our school board. The board members are also parents of school children. Their children are also the;victim of a poor educational system. When our claildren graduate and go to college, then, we can all so how we wasted 12 years of their lives. So many of our children today are super-bright, super-intelligent. All they need is exposure, challenge, encouragement. We can prepare them better. Let’s get together. Help me compile the list of complaints and concerns. Let’s turn this situation around and work with our school board for a better society. Let’s avoid divisive activities... The ladies of the Uvalde Garden Club who requested that some of their daughters who are members of the Drill Squad participate at a function at the local Country Club didn’t realize what they were creating. Drill Squad Director Sherry Bolin called me last week to explain it was not done as an intentional discriminatory act, it just happened the mothers wanted their daughters on the program. Since the country club traditionally excludes Mexican-Americans, it created a sense of divisiveness and hostility in the group. Mrs. Bolin assured me that she would avoid similar situations, I hope so, because I know our girls work as a team, and together they ALL work to raise funds for the team.
