Page 4 EL UVALDE TIMES November 9, 1991 Shutoff the TV and see improved learning By Jane and Jerry Chavez SHUT OFF THE TV! Excessive television viewing is associated with low academic achievement. Moderate viewing when supervised by parents can help children learn. Watching television more than two to three hours a day often hurls children's achievement in reading, writing, and mathematics, especially if it disrupts homework and leisure reading. More time spent viewing means less time for more intellectual activities. Parents and other adults influence how TV viewing affects children. Parents need to be aware of how much TV their children watch and how important it is to monitor their viewing time. When an adult selects and monitors a child's TV viewing--answering questions, explaining words, concepts, or twists and turns of the plot-the child's verbal, reading and writing skills often increase. Moderate TV viewing can actually help students from backgrounds in which books and magazines are in short supply. When we lived in Brazil (1960-1969) and in El Salvador (1969-1974) we would return to the United States every two years to visit family and friends in New Mexico and New York State. We were always shocked to discover the enormous amount of time that children sat viewing television programs. Our daughters were always disappointed because their cousins and family friends never wanted to talk or play. They were glued to the TV. As the girls grew older, we often voted as a family whether to purchase a television set. It was always voted down unanimously through the years. They much preferred to swim, read, travel, play games, sing and assist with the family garden and landscaping. We never missed watching television as wc were always so busy and having so much fun with these other activities. However, recently wc purchased a television set for our son Luis, to help teach and stimulate his interest in other activities. Since he has cerebral palsy and is confined to a wheel chair, he is limited in his involvement in outdoor activities. We are selective of the programs he watches so they help to teach and/* entertain him.
