Page 17 ARIZONA HOLDS FIRST .• CON EERENCE W?.at many believe will be the beginning of a fine thing was the first Toxican Youth Conference held In Arizona, Saturday and Sunday of December second and third. The successful two day session was held at the Tempe State Teacher’s College, under the auspices of "Los Conquistadores" college Mexican youth club. Saturday morning opened the sessions with Mr. Morelos Gonzales, Mexican consul at phoenix, stressing confidence in ourselves and naming successful Mexican men in the United Spates as examples. Rebecca Munoz introduced the California Mexican Youth Conference leaders. Gonzalo Martinez and Laura Mae Hurtado shared musical selections. The afternoon was spent in showing the fellows from California the Mexican Youth work fostered -in that vicinity. The many beautiful sights were shown along with a view Of a blazing Arizona sunset. A Banquet was held Saturday night with Adolfo Guerrero and Félix (lutierrez shariñg speaking assignments. Mr. Guerrero spoke of his father’s club work in Mesa; how they had started, and what they hoped for the .future. Folix spoke on the departments of the Mexican Youth Conference, "The Mexican Voice," and stressed the fact that it was up to youth to solve the problems erf our people. Mias Er--a Wilson and Dr. Burkhard expressed their sincere support for our finest ideals. %Puul Coronel and Laui'a Mae Hurtado entertained with a violin and piano duet. - -) The Sunday session was by far 'the most successful. In the audience were present social workers, several teachers, and more college students of Mexican descent who had arrived, from their Thanksgiving vacations. Paul Coronel opened the meeting with the ideas and hopes of the Mexican Youth Conference. Gualberto Valadez followed very pepplly, expressing the definite need for club work among our people. Miss Munoz told of the problems found among our people around the immediate vicinity and set the righting of these problems as a challenge to our Mexican Youth. Mrs. Maria Garcia, wife of Arizona’s Assistant Attorney General, expressed her sincerest support. Mr. Guerrero chose one of his boys, Arturo Aguilar, to speak before the assemblage . Following the speaker’s ex- ' pressions a very lively and inspirational discussion was held. Questions were asked about -the Mexican Youth Conference. Ideas were exchanged, ideals were expressed. The Conference closed Sund,a.y noon, as the leaders from California had to return for Monday classes. A perfect unification and spirit was held throughout the whole ^inference, a great part of this w^s due to Tony Vicente "El Presidente de Los Conquistadores’1 who presided over al" the sessions.
