When you look at the styling of a “stretch knit only” dress, you 11 see that it’s simple in structure. For example, the dress illustrated is a pulloxer by Simplicity. The body is just a rectangle. The deep armholes, slashed and buttoned opening and top-stitching give it high fashion marks. The soft, subtle effect of the stretch knit completes its role as a versatile dress; ready for the office, dinner or disco. . The secret to the success of a stretch knit dress is the right size pattern. When a pattern is offered that includes three sizes in one, you have the option of increasing or decreasing the silhouette at strategic places. If a “stretch knit only” pattern is one size, and your measurements put you between sizes, choose the smaller size pattern. Before permanently stitching the seams, baste the shoulders and side seams to check the fit. It’s worth the small amount of time involved. <5 To be attractive, the dress should C i )t look tierht or nvprfitfpd Rojelio P. Perez Seguros de Vida Casa y Auto 111 E. The fabric should glide smoothly over the abdomen, hips and derriere. There should not be any strain, wrinkles or cupping under the curves. Though you’ve selected a pattern closest to your measurements, a pattern can only be “average/’ You may need to make slight alterations. The neckline is another area where you want to take a critical look during the basted fitting. If the neckline is too low for your personal preference, make a pin tuck at the neck edge and taper to the shoulder edge. The seams of a stretch knit dress must have “give” in order to perform with the fabric. When you move and the fabric moves, the stitches in the seams need to be able to stretch and then return to a stable state. This means that an adequate amount of thread has to be worked into the seam. When you use a straight stitch, hold the fabric with the left hand in back of the presser foot and the right hand in front and stretch the fabric gently during stitching. This technique not only introduces stretch into the seam, but prevents puckering. When your sewing machine has an elastic straight stitch or a zigzag stitch, use either one for your stretch knit sewing. However, do not pull or stretch the fabric.
