Laverne Rodriguez Wins Miss Majorette
of Texas; Advances To National Finals
SAN ANTONIO-Laverne Rodriguez daughter of Mr. and Mrs.	Faustino
Rodriguez of 550 Diaz St was named Miss Majorette of Texas at the 1979 NBTA Texas Twirling Championships and Miss Majorette of America State Preliminary. Held at the Virgil T. Blossom Atheletic Center last weekend, the event gathered twirling hopefuls of all ages from throughout the state.
Laverne competed with seventeen other twirlers for the coveted title which will now take her to Notre Dame University where she will participate in the Miss Majorette of America next July 24-28.
Laverne obtained her victory by scoring highly in several im-
portant categones m the 17-20 age group. She placed First in the Intermediate Solo; First Place in the Intermediate T-Strut, First Place in the overall T-Strut; and Second Place in the Basic Strut. She also placed Third Place in the overall Intermediate Solo in the 15-20 age

Other titles in twirling events that Laverne has acquired throughout her high school career include Miss Majorette of Texas in 1976, 1978, and 1979. Third Runner-up for the same title in 1977; Uvalde High School Varsity Twirler, two
years; Feature Twirler in 1978 and 1979.
Other honors include her being selected 1978 Uvalde Honey Queen sponsored by the Uvalde Chamber of Commerce and 1978 UHS Home-coming Queen. Uvalde is indeed proud of Laverne's accomplish-

Festival goers of the Cactus Jack World Championship Festival to be held this weekend will have the opportunity to participate in five different Cactus Jack World Championship Contest
The contests will include the Cactus Jack World Championship Jalapeno Eating Contest and Bean Throw, both sponsored by El Uvalde Times: The Flying Saucer Whirl
and 5000 meter Fun Run, both sponsored by Bill’s Shoe Tree: and the Cactus Jack World Championship Washer Pitch.
The Ben Throw will take place on Saturday June 23 starting at 1:30 p.m. and will continue to 4:30 p.m. An entry fee of one dollar per contestant will be charged and contestants may compete as often as they wish. The winner of
the Bean Throw will be determined by the number of points accumulated.
Prizes for the Bean Throw will be 10 dollars and a Cactus Jack World Championship T-shirt for first place: five dollars and a shirt for second place: and a T-shirt for third place.
Registration for the Jalapeno Eating Contest will begin at 1:30
