Martinez, Harrell Elected To City Council Martinez, Harrell Elijidos al Concilio En una elección muy animada y con un gran numero de votantes, los ciudadanos de Uvalde eligieron a dos nombres nuevos a la politica como conséjales de la Cuidad Paul Martinez recibió la cantidad mas grande de votos con 1,426 y el segundo ganador fue John Harrell con 1,336 votos. Ricardo Nevarez perdió su deseo de ser consejal con solamente 702 votos. El total de personas que votaron fue de 2,063. Fue muy evidente que el intento de Nevarez de "Voten por uno solamente” dio resultado ya que sus apoyadores igno naror a Paul Martinez y a John Harrell. El gran numero de votantes anglo, sin embargo que habían decidido votar por Harrell y Martinez dijo otras a Nevarez fue pronto al principio de la elección. Paul Martinez received the highest votes with 1,426 and John Harrell received 1,336. Ricardo Nevarez lost his bid for the council with only 702 votes. A total of 2,063 voters participated in the election. Nevarez' drive of “Vote For One Only” was successful in that most of his supporters ignored Paul Martinez and John Harrell, however, the strong anglo voter turnout for the Martinez-Harrell ticket left Nevarez behind early in the? election. Absentee votes were also by a large margin for the winning duo. The elction ran very smoothly and although representatives from the Secretary of State's Office had been requested to watch the election, the indication at the end of the election was no major discrepancies had been filed. Gerald Geistweidt, newly elected State Representative for our District 56 is out to protect some ranchers and ignore the rest of his constituents by proposing that the riverbeds in every river in our county be closed. La elección decisiva nos Continua en pag. 3 Women And The Law Conference The 10th National Conference on Women and the Law will meet March 29 through April ,1 at ;;v,he San Antonio ention Center. Keynoting the event on March 30 will be Vilma Martinez, President and General Councel for the Mexican-American Legal Defense and Educational Fund (MALDEF). Among the 135 workshops will be many that deal in detail with the legal problems of people designated as minorities in the United States. Racism in the criminal justice system, affirmative action in education and employment, immigration issues, and housing and zoning discrimination are among the topics that will de discussed. These workshops are scheduled for Saturday and Sunday and both daily admission fees and translators will be available. \ i x < -A < Other workshops that are scheduled throughout the four days cover women as victims and criminals, problems of the elederly, marriage and divorce, property rights, women! and unions, migrant workers, and health care. Jerry Canales shows Assistant Principal Mike Mireles (left) and Principal Robert Baldwin of Uvalde High School his official notification of his appointment to the U. S. Military Academy at West Point. Jerry is a senior at UHS and was the principal nominee for an appointment to West Point of Congressman Chick Kazen. Senator Lloyd Bentsen also chose him as a nominee and Senator John Tower endorsed it. Jerry is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Y. P. Canales, Jr. of 853 S. Schleicher tiene una larga lista de servicio a la comunidad. Ella fue maestra en las escuelas de Uvalde por muchos anos y presta servicio am muchos clubs civicos al servicio de la comunidad como las Damas Auxiliares del Hospital quienes sirven voluntariamente; el Uvalde Garden Clu, siendo ella muy activa en proyectos para embellecer la ciudad; y entre otors ayuda a la organización de Ninos Paralizados de Texas. Listed on the agenda is a discussion of the Civil Suit filed by the Uvalde County against Sheriff Kenneth Kelley and the Surety Company.
