El programa de evaluación empezado por la cuidad de Uvalde en el otoTlo de 1978 esta por terminarse. Este programa fue empezado para correjir los errores en las listas de impuestos y para eliminar valuaciones desiguales que han ocurrido como resultado de la inflación y otros factores económicos.

El peligro de la enfermedad que puede ser fatal ha estado aumentando en el sur de Texas y causado la muerte de varios ñiños. Animales monteses han contagiado a los animales domésticos.

Preparations for the upcoming celebration of the Diez y Seis, Mexican Independence Day got underway last Tuesday with a meeting held by the Committee for the Celebration of Patriotic Events at the American Legion Hall.
Present at the meeting were Juan Martinez, Commander of the American Legion Post 479, Santos Flores III, Vice-Commander, Hector Garcia and Pablo Luna, also Legion reoresentatives. Gerardo Carrasco, Olga Rodríguez,Carrmeh Garza. Frances < Hernandez and Manuel Castillo also attended as committee members.
The tentative schedule prepared has set the celebration for September 14, 15 and 16. On the first day of the fiesta is included a special ceremony to rename the park to Jardin De Heroes Park, or ‘Garden of Heroes Park’, in honor of all the veterans that gave their lives in war.
The annual parade is tentatively scheduled for Saturday, September 15 at 4 p.m. The coronation of the Queen of the Diez y Seis is set for Sunday afternoon.
There were be the usual booths of food and games and free nightly dances with a band to be obtained later. Santos Flores reported that all but two of the booths have already been reserved. The park has capacity for 31 booths.
There are two added attractions to the fies
ta this year. Gerardo (Jerry) Carrasco will coordinate a Menudo Cooking Contest that will be held on Sunday afternoon. The entry fee is $7.00 and the cooking must be done at the park. The contestants must furnish all their ingredients and cooking equipment. Judges will be invited from among the many guests for the fiesta.
Also added to this year’s program is a Disco Contest. There are to be two divisions, one for teen agers and one for children. Jerry Carrasco and Oscar Lopez will be in charge of this event and those interested in participating should get in touch with them or attend the committee meetings on each Tuesday of this month.

ED PHELPS JR., Director of Membership Marketing and Community Services for the South Texas Chamber of Commerce which covers 52 counties in South Texas was in Uvalde this week to speak on the importance of the Chamber of Commerce in the community and the importance of the local Chamber of Commerce staying up with the times.


Candidates for Queen of the Diez of the Diez y Seis arc being encouraged at this time. The ladies must be between the ages of 16 and 22 and local merchants will be invited to sponsor a candidate. Anyone wishing more information may contact Carmen Garza at 278-9364 or Olga Rodríguez at 278-3061.
