Postage Paid Permit No. 1 00 El Uvalde Times 78801 25c EMS Urge Mas Voluntarios La unidad del EMS de Uvalde voto el pasado miércoles por la noche continuar sus servicios por cuando menos dos meses mas con la esperanza de que se puedan conseguir voluntarios adicionales en ese tiempo para llevar acabo los servicios de atención medica de emergencia. El EMS se reunió en el restaurante Town House para decidir si continuarían sus servicios, ya que el miércoles de la semana anterior le habian dicho al Juez del Condado de Uvalde que a menos de que recibieran ayuda, el EMS tendría que disolverse.. La mayoría de los voluntarios no desean que el EMS sea un puesto con salario, ya que de ese modo los ciudadanos tendrían que pagar mucho mas por sus servicios y lo inevitable seria un aumento de impuestos locales. Remember these two Saturdays in February-Feb 3 and Feb. 24. On the 3rd we will elect our State Representative from District 56. There are two candidates in that run-off election-- Scott Stehling, an independent from Kerrville, Texas, and' Gerald Geiswiedt, a Republican from Mason, Texas. Even though our local candidates did not make it to the run-off we must come out and vote in this election and keep up a good voting strength so that future state and national candidates will know Uvalde is place to contend with. Our vote is our voice! February 24 has been set as the date for the run-off election for two City Councilmen. The candidates are John Harrell, Ricardo Nevarez and Paul Martinez. All of them are new to public office and I am certain all have a sincere interest in representing us on the council. It will be up to us die voters to decide how much support they will recieve from us. I’ve said this before— I appreciate every candidate that comes forth, it is not an easy job and it can be a difficult and trying time for them. Continua en pag. 8 Rudy Flores Honored Fue una noche inolvidable para el Sr. Rudy Flores y su familia el sabado pasado cuando un grupo de íntimos amigos lo honraron con una cariñosa muy elegante reunion como bienvenida a Uvalde. Por los últimos seis anos el Sr. Flores había hecho su segunda residencia pn la capital estatal como asistente al anterior Gobernador Dolph Briscoe. El trabajo tan intenso de la captial y su incansable ble tarea en otros cumplimientos fuera de la capital y del estado mantuvo fuera de Uvalde a la familia Flores. Al terminar su puesto oficial el Gobernador Briscoe, Rudy ahora regresa a Three Make It The Uvalde voters came out 1,413 strong last Saturday and the votes were so divided that three out of the five candidates made it to the run-off. with Top for 795 vote City John 587 by with Unopposed Mayor Charles Cain, Jr. was re-elected votes, getter Councilman was H. Harrell with votes followed Ricardo Nevarez 529 and Paul Martinez with 487 votes. The three will be on the ballot again in the run-off election that has been set for February 24. The two defeated can- Run-Off didates received significant votes with Bracher with 475 votes resulting just 12 votes short for the run-off. David Low was the lowest candidate with 408. Suit'wit A settlement has been reached in a federal suit by the United States Justice Department over alleged discriminatory hiring and promotional practices of the Texas Department of Human Resources (DHR), Texas Merit System Council, Texas Department of Health and Texas Employment Commission. The settlement, filed in the U.S. District Court in Austin, was agreed upon by DHR and the Texas Attorney General in order to comply with the concept of equal employment opportunity and to avoid expensive litigation in the courts. (DHR), DHR and the other Federal Discrmination tate Agencies ettled state agencies were accused of alleged discriminatory hiring and promotional practices pertaining to blacks and Hispanics. Additionally the Merit Council, Health Department and Employment Commis- sion were also cited for discriminatory practices against females. Camino Real SAC 24 Meets Feb. 1 Regular meeting of the Subarea Advisory Council for Planning Region 24 is scheduled for Thursday, February 1, 1979 at 7:30 p.m. at the Camino Real Health System Agency satellite office. The rual office of the health planning corporation is located at 1906 Ave. “F” Del Rio. Among the items to be discussed is a review of the preliminary health plans formulated for the 21 counties comprising health service area nine according to Jose A. Contreras, executive director of Camino Real. “The 1979 versions of the five-year Health Systems Plan and the one year.Annual Imple, mentation Plan are of vital1 importance to the residents of the Middle Rio Grande area in that the helath condition of the area residents is at stake,” said Contreras. Acting as the helath planning agency for the area encompassing the Middle Rio Grande region, Camino Real is responsible for putting together, with citizen input, the blueprints for the continued good health of area residents “Citizen input is the key,” said Contreras. “Along with the fine work that the Subarea Advisory Council has done in the past and will continue to do, we must keep in mind that other persons reside in the area, and they must also be given the opportunity to comment.’5 For that reason, the Camino Real Health Systems Agency has slated a public hearing in the Middle Rio Grande area with the expressed purpose of receiving comments from the public on the draft plans.
